Former Nyandarua Governor Waithaka Mwangi has been arrested.
Waithaka was arrested alongside former County Water CEC Grace Wanjiru and former director in the Department of Water, Environment and Natural Resources Kahiu Gaiko.
The three were apprehended at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Nyeri town after surrendering themselves.
Officers from the EACC have launched a manhunt for another former Nyandarua county officer, John Ngigi Daniel, who is still at large.
This comes a day after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Hajji issued an order for the arrest of Mwangi and seven others for alleged involvement in dubious Sh 50million water and sewerage tender issued in 2014.
“The EACC undertook investigations and established that the county government of Nyandarua unlawfully engaged M/S Tahal Consulting Engineers Ltd.”
“The firm was to undertake the development of a county masterplan, design, and review of the sewerage system and unlawfully paid a sum of S 50, 470, 513.90,” Haji said in a press statement on Wednesday evening.
Haji said the former Governor and the seven officials will answer to charges of violating laws and regulations relating to procurement in awarding of the tender.
They also face charges of abuse of office, failure to comply with procurement laws and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
