Former United States President Barack Obama was reportedly on a holiday in neighbouring country, Tanzania before flying to Kenya on Sunday afternoon.
Obama landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday afternoon and was received by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monicah Juma and her sister Auma Obama.
He was immediately driven to the State House in Nairobi, where he met President Uhuru Kenyatta.
It has now emerged that the 44th President of the US spent eight days in Tanzania before embarking on his two-day tour to Kenya.
In a tweet on Sunday, Tanzania Director for Presidential Communication Gerson Msigwa thanked Obama for visiting the country.
“Thank you Former President of USA Barack Obama for visiting and making a long stay of 8 days to our beautiful country Tanzania,” Mr Msigwa’s caption of photos with Obama read.
Images circulated on the social media showed Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport and at the Serengeti National Park.
On Monday, Obama will fly to his father’s ancestral home in Kogelo, Siaya County where he will open a sports centre under Sauti Kuu Foundation, an organization established by her sister Auma.
This will be the third time he is visiting his father’s ancestral village and the first time since 2006, when he was a senator.
The last time he was in Kenya was on July 2015, where he attended the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, an initiative of the US Presidency.
