Government Considers Abolishing Boarding Schools in Kenya

The government says it’s considering abolishing boarding primary and secondary schools in the country due to the high rate of arson cases.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said the ministry sees this as one of the ways of ending the menace that has been recurring almost every year.

“The direction that we need to go is a day school system where students operate from home. The ministry would want to increase opportunities in day schooling so that parents can have an opportunity of engaging their children and making sure that the children are properly taken care of,” said the PS.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed said three students have so far been jailed and 125 others arrested in connection to fire incidents in their schools.

“Three students from Siakago Boys in Embu have been jailed for one year on probation and have since cleared from the school. They can only attend a day school as they report to the local chief,” said Amb. Mohamed.

“125 students from various affected schools have been arrested as police intensify the crackdown on all masterminds of the recent cases of student unrest.”

In the last two weeks, more than 15 boarding secondary schools have experienced cases of unrest, most of them being arson incidents targeting dormitories.

Amina attributed the cases to general indiscipline and the tough examination rules by the ministry aimed at stamping out cheating.

Earlier this week, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) put on notice all students engaging in criminal activities.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said the DCI will archive the students’ criminal records and have them reflected in certificates of good conduct in the future.

    • Let her abolish Boarding BOY…
Let her abolish Boarding BOY Schools and GIRL Schools all together. These are Breeding Grounds for HOMOSEXUALITY (Boys to Boys/ Girls to Girls Sex in Dorms). Kick those “Cans of Worms” down the Road!!!

  2. Agreee in the US they have…
Agreee in the US they have no boarding schools and they have best economy in the world. Boarding schools were necessary in Kenya when we did not have enough schools and students from remote areas needed accommodations. Abolish boarding schools and while at it abolish private schools also make the rich and poor attend public schools, you will see how good public schools will become and the amount of resources that will be poured on them

  3. This may be a better choice…
This may be a better choice. We have parents who supposedly have children but hate parenting so lets us see vile watafanya. A government can do many things lakini haiwezi kuwa mzazi. Get out of the bar, out of the women church meeting or wherever take care of your indisciplined child. You can not blame gova on this one, it is poor parenting. In the meantime, any child causing problems should attend day school, way to go.

  4. Abolishing boarding schools…
Abolishing boarding schools may not be the best solution to the ordeals. It would be like relocating a monkey to a nearby forest.let proper guidance and counselling be established in schools. correct the mindset, not the geographical setting

  5. In my opinion, all public…
In my opinion, all public schools should be day schools. We cannot fund them well enough to make them both a school and a home. We have a mentality that when we send kids to boarding schools, the teachers take over the parenting role too. In public schools we don’t pay them (teachers) enough for this. Let parents take care of their kids behavior and teachers take care of teaching. Boarding schools should be required to have all facilities on board, including staff whose only role is to take care of the absent parental guidance and support. My take.

  6. Those boarding schools…
Those boarding schools should have been closed a long time ago. They were part of colonization.(Divide and Rule) They were meant to separate the kids from the parents at the earliest possible
So the kids do not learn the parents language or culture. No Wonder we have so many problems because the kids do not know who they are. Give the kids back to their parents and let the parents teach them their language and culture.

  8. If boarding schooling is…
If boarding schooling is going to be a abolished due to lack of solutions to the problems that ails these schools then it’s a wrong premise.Indiscipline must be tackled head on.Adults nowadays seem to lack the skills and ability to discipline students.Students seen to overrun teachers.40 years ago this was never the case, much I less cheating o n exams. Adults should be able to contain kids.

  9. Abolishing of boarding…
Abolishing of boarding schools ,may not be the right solution now.Remember there are some students ,from different parts of the country ,who goes to the other parts for there studies. My advice is ,Government should come up with system of locating psychologists in this schools to help understand this children, not there teachers being placed as counselors yet they don’t have that skill of counseling …….

  10. These students are just…
These students are just indisciplined. Our parents and us went to boarding schools and you seldom heard of sijui school burning. The GOK needs to come with a strategy on how to hold these students and pupils accountable.

  11. This is a good and a…
This is a good and a brilliant idea. The parents disciplines and community environment on which the child is brought up matters.

  12. Abolishing boarding schools…
Abolishing boarding schools in Kenya is the dumbest idea somebody can ever come with. The problem is not boarding schools but indiscipline. These students will take the same bad behaviors to day schools. Kenya is undeveloped country and you cannot compare it with USA where students take schools bus to go to school. Students will be forced to walk for long distances or rent houses near the schools. A minor needs to live at home with his/her parents or in a boarding school but not in a rented house alone in another town or village.

  13. I agree boarding schools…
I agree boarding schools should be abolished. Let us parents nature our children instead of letting others do it. They spend most of the time in schools

  14. During my boarding school…
During my boarding school haungeenda shule na civilian clothes..only uniform..walk man..radio No no..hatukuwa na simi..wifi..wasnt anywhere..not sure nowarday with technology addition ya simu..play station Wifi..selfi..how are students cooping are they allowed to use phones in school..contrary if not watasumbua..cant imagine imprompto box searches in boarding anything irregal was confiscated until end term..high time to review the DO AND DONTS IN CURRENT BOARDING SCHOOL TO CHILDRENS..before abolishing thought.

  15. There are pro’s and con’s…
There are pro’s and con’s about boarding schools. It is a moral crime to separate a child from parents before they are fully developed. Let the government abolish boarding primary schools. On the other hand, the government should not abolish high schools without research and study of the impact. It should consult the stake holders. Stake holders in this case being the students and parents. God help Kenya
