The wreckage of a light Nairobi-bound aircraft that went missing on Tuesday evening has finally been spotted south-west of the Aberdares by an aerial search team.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday morning, Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said the wreckage was located from a chopper that was carrying out aerial surveillance in Njabini area, Nyandarua County on Thursday morning.
“I am waiting for specific details of the location but at the moment what I can confirm is that it was spotted South West of the Aberdares region. We continue with the ground search of the survivors and we trust that in the next one hour, we should have very comprehensive information,” he stated.
“The ground search will intensify in the next hour despite poor weather conditions that are posing a challenge,” the PS added.
The Fly SAX plane from Kitale had 8 passengers and two crew members and went off the radar at 5:20pm, the exact time it was set to land at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Family and friends of the missing passengers and crew camped at the Weston Hotel in Nairobi awaiting further information on the search operation.
The recovery operation faced challenges from bad weather, which is also suspected to be the cause of the crash that occurred on Tuesday.
