MP Proposes Life Imprisonment for Corrupt Officials in New Bill

Suspects convicted of corruption offences could soon be handed life sentences should Members of Parliament approve a new Bill fronted by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

The Bill seeks to introduce amendments on the Anti- Corruption and Economic Crimes Act to include among other penalties, life imprisonment for those found guilty of graft related offences.

The Bill comes at a time when the government has stepped up the fight against corruption in the public service following the arrest and charging of Youth Principal Secretary Lillian Omollo over the Sh9 billion scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS).

Ms Omollo was charged last week alongside NYS Director-General Richard Ndubai and 40 other suspects in connection to the scam.

If the Bill sails through, those committing graft related crimes will be handed life imprisonment, a sentence similar to people found guilty of capital offences such as murder, manslaughter and robbery with violence.

Nyoro said his Bill mainly aims at reducing the  high levels of corruption in the public sector. “It is important that as the oversight authority in terms of prudent use of public resources, the National Assembly tightens all the loopholes that have made  the fight against corruption a challenge,” Nyoro told the Nation.

The Jubilee MP further wants the law changed to insert timelines so that all corruption cases are adjudicated and determined within 90 days.

“This will ensure that justice is served within the required time as opposed to the current situation, where cases drag on in court for years and at the end, the suspects are set free to go and spend the ill-gotten wealth. This is something we want to contain,” the MP said.

  1. DPP Noordin should charge…
DPP Noordin should charge Nyoro and fellow MPs with ABUSE OF OFFICE offense for increasing their own pensions and salaries.

  2. Instead of life imprisonment…
Instead of life imprisonment, I strongly propose summary execution for all those convicted. It’s a very effective way of eliminating the vice and has been employed by several countries successfully

  3. You should add hanging of…
You should add hanging of corrupt officials to the bill. All along, I thought robbery with violence is punishable by death. Did that change?

    • This is robbery without…
This is robbery without violence…..but it is robbery and abuse of office and yes, all should be punishable by death.

  6. Please please pay me to do…
Please please pay me to do the hanging job or I can do it for free on Wednesday-Friday.We start with raila/kidero

  7. If chicken thieves get 10,…
If chicken thieves get 10, 20, 30 years when the present law is used, while rich thieves go scot free, the law here seems not to be the problem. The problem is the corrupt judiciary. It executes the law when the poor are involved but shelves it when big fish are concerned. If we want to wipe out corruption, the corrupt judicial officers must go. It can’t work unless everyone is held accountable. Looted money and property bought with the loot should be first confiscated before these fellas are put behind bars. Corruption is not easily rooted out but it can be minimized and those caught in it punished to the fullest extent of the law. Period! No sacred cows! Uhuru and your team, do not relent. Forget about your other four agendas and deal with this first. The four will not work unless corruption is dealt with now.

    • I have said it here before,…
I have said it here before, and glad you seem to share my opinion. Unless the JUDICIARY wakes up, Uhuru’s effort is all in vain. These damn Legislators are in the business of making laws yet they break it with impunity…..go for their jugulars and get over with this wanton behaviour. What a shame when wananchi cannot get justice??? Our Judiciary is corrupt, weak, failed, and a laughing stone….yet they shamelessly draw their HUGE salaries and allowance every month… Stealing from the poor and oppressed — May God pay each one of them ten-fold what he/she has served!

      • @ Joe Kamande,and JustMe,…
@ Joe Kamande, and JustMe, the both of you are correct. Its the Judicial system that is corrupt.Add the police to that- the most corrupt entity in the country year after year.
I will only go for a new law if its proven that the current laws are not working,if fully implemented.
Another worry some crime that seems to have increased exponentially ins sexual crimes. Girlds being raped in schools, women raped in the day light in Nairobi streets. Not to mention the unreported sexual crimes. What’s going onwith Kenyan men?And yes there was one female teacher charged with statutory rape, that’s an exception to the rule. Ihave already commented my position on this…
Hang all the rapists. Seems like life imprisonment for them is not a deterrent.

  8. They should create a court…
They should create a court like the way the did in Rwanda after the genocide. All corrupt official should be tried in that court not the current wakora under Maraga

  9. Interesting how people will…
Interesting how people will shout “kill them all” at the top of their lungs but when their relative or tribesman is the one facing the hangman they cry foul, ati anaonewa, leave our tribe alone and such kinda fallacy. Be careful what you wish for especially in a country where only the poor face justice.
