Jubilee party Vice Chair David Murathe says that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is on the brink of being impeached.
Speaking on Thursday, the top Jubilee official said that Governor Sonko’s decision to nominate Miguna Miguna as Nairobi Deputy Governor was an attempt to block the impeding impeachment.
Murathe, a close ally of President Kenyatta, further stated that Sonko had failed to deliver services to Nairobi residents as Jubilee party pledged during campaigns for last year’s elections.
“Sonko is forestalling his impeachment which has nothing to do with the DG’s position but his administration’s dismal performance. He is covering up his mistakes by trying to divert attention. His nomination of Miguna is of no significance,” Murathe stated.
“The impeachment will proceed and it has to do with failures to deliver services to the people as was pledged by the party during campaigns. He can throw tantrums but they will have no consequence. We want action and not talking lies,” he declared.
Murathe appeared to confirm reports that Sonko had fallen out with the party leadership. Sonko has been accusing top officials in President Kenyatta’s administration of undermining him.
Speaking to Citizen TV on phone on Thursday, Sonko said the decision to nominate the self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general was informed by the need to flush out cartels from the County Hall.
“I settled on Miguna Miguna so that he can help me in fighting the cartels. I know that Miguna is the number one ‘anti-cartel’ ,” said Sonko.
