Murang’a Women Rep. Sabina Chege Denies Links to Man Accused of Conning MPs

Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege has reacted to reports that she has close ties with a man accused of using fake Mpesa accounts to con Members of Parliament and other VIPs.

Speaking on Friday, Ms Chege denied having any links with the conman identified as Benson Chacha (25) and lashed out at the media for publishing the story without verifying facts.

“If my name was mentioned, they should have sought to prove and contact the DCI for clarification,” Ms Chege said.

“This man is a known criminal and that is what I have been saying… then the media picked the story and said I know him,” she added.

She further expressed fears for her life since the suspect had not been apprehended despite her disclosing his identity to the police.

“Those who said that I know him, only God can judge you,” she said.

On Thursday, media reports suggested that the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti had disclosed that the conman has a “special” relationship with the MP. The police boss was appearing before National Assembly Committee on security.

“We have carried in-depth investigations on this matter and come to the conclusion that there is a special relation between complaints (MPs) and the suspect which I may not be comfortable discussing in public,” Kinoti reportedly told the committee as quoted by media outlets.

However, in a statement on Twitter, DCI denied linking the conman to Ms Chege.

“The Director of Criminal Investigations would wish to clarify allegations by some media houses,that Hon. Sabina Chege is said to have had a special relationship with a suspect being pursued by Police. The allegations are not only false but also misleading,” DCI tweeted on Friday.
