Four people lost their lives while more than 5,000 were left homeless after a Sunday night inferno razed down several houses in Kijiji slums in Nairobi’s Lang’ata estate.
Confirming the deaths, National Disaster Management Unit Deputy Director Pius Masai said four bodies were retrieved from the scene on Monday morning.
Police have commenced investigations into the incident establish the cause of the fire. Hundreds of families slept in the cold following the fire.
“We appeal for well-wishers to bring food and non-food items to the affected families,” Mr Masai said.
Victims have pitched tent at Ngei Primary School to receive humanitarian assistance.Dwellers have faulted the Nairobi County Government firefighters for taking too long to respond.
“The fire engine from Nairobi County arrived here late after the damage had already been done and more so they had no water so we fail to understand why they even came here,” said Martin Oginga, a resident.
