Kenyan Drivers to Renew Licences Annually as NTSA Introduces New Strict Driving Guidelines

In a bid to restore sanity in Kenyan roads, the National transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has introduced strict guidelines for drivers.

The new rules for drivers comes after increased number of road carnage that has been experienced in the recent past, claiming lives of hundreds of Kenyans.

In the new guidelines, drives involved in accidents could have their licences suspended for a period of not longer than six months.

Drivers will further be required to renew their licenses every year as opposed to the current rules where one renews after three years. Drivers will also undergo medical examination and their driving skills tested again after 10 years of driving.

The road safety agency also said drivers above the age of 70 years will undergo medical fitness test annually before being issued with new drivers licenses.

The authority further announced that those who fail fresh drivers exams will be sent back to driving school.

In the new rules, NTSA appears determined to redeem its image in the eye of the public after being blamed for road accidents witnessed last year. This prompted President Uhuru to order the agency to withdraw all its officers from Kenyan roads and hand over its duties to Kenya police.

  1. Nonsense … if accidents…
Nonsense … if accidents continue we shall be renewing licenses every day at 8 am …

NTSA doesn’t know what the heck they are talking about. This awfully incompetent agency needs to be scrapped and traffic safety be reorganized. There are three Es in traffic safety: 1) driver Education and licensing; 2) Engineering of highway infrastructure; and 3) Enforcement of traffic laws. Most of traffic accidents on how roads are attributed to lack of effective enforcement of traffic laws because NTSA and police officers are on roads solely to collect bribes; not to arrest drunk drivers, cite speeding or reckless drivers or get unroadworthy vehicles off our roads and streets. Requiring drivers to renew licenses every year, be retested every 10 years or every year for those 70years and older is a futile kneejerk overreaction by ineptly incompetent and corrupt organization just as nighttime travel ban was. The government and Parliament must scrap NTSA or at a minimum restructure it such that its role is solely to conduct traffic accident investigations and analysis. Then collaborate with a new Departmeyof Motor Vehicles (DMV) responsible for the first E (driver education and licensing. vehicle registration and transport licensing board); Ministry of Transport (2nd E), and Traffic Police (3rd E) to enhance traffic safety in our country. Lastly, but very important, the Parliament should add in Traffic Act specific qualifications and relevant work experience of the CEO or Managing Director of a recostituted NTSA. It’s foolhardy to have NTSA headed by a political appointee who is totally clueless about traffic safety and how engineering, human, vehicle, environmental and enforcement factors that contribute to traffic accidents. We can and must be better than kneejerk reactionaries!!

Total none sense.I think its one way of extracting money from common man.I bitterly condemn

Renewing license after one year will increase corruption & workload. 5 year is good but be strict to the young drivers below 25 yrs. Revoke the license of careless drivers. Have a hotline to report careless drivers and put speed cameras

I think young drivers cause accidents more than aged drivers. Drivers aged 40yrs and above are more experienced and should not be treated like toddlers on the road. tighten rules yes but understand the gap
