Former The National Alliance (TNA) nominated Senator Joy Gwendo was on Friday arrested by Ethics and Anti- corruption Commission (EACC) detectives for alleged abuse of office and theft of money amounting to Sh2.2 million.
Her arrest came after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved she be charged with stealing, issuing bad cheques and abuse of office in respect to Sh2.2 million.
The cash belonged to members of a Kisumu-based cooperative society. The anti-graft watchdog officers questioned Gwendo at their headquarters in Nairobi, before freeing her on Sh 100,000 cash bail.
“Former Senator Joy Gwendo, arrested for abuse of office and theft of Kshs. 2.2 Million. She’s recorded a statement with @EACCKenya today and released on cash bail of kshs.100K to appear in court on Monday,” EACC posted on its Twitter handle.
Gwendo is said to have committed the alleged offences in the period between October and December, 2016. She will be arraigned in court on Monday, EACC said.
She run for Kisumu Town East parliamentary seat in the 2017 general election, but lost to Orange Democratic Movement’s Shakeel Shabbir.
