Safaricom has dispelled claims that there is an imminent plan to replace ailing Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore.
This follows reports circulating on social media that Collymore would be replaced by Yolanda Zoleka, Vodafone’s senior manager in Ghana.
Information from Vodafone Ghana website shows that Yolanda Zoleka, a South African citizen, was hired by Vodacom Group in November 2014 as strategy and new business director.
“I have also seen the rumour doing rounds on social media; ignore it, that’s fake news,” a senior staff at Safaricom told the Star.
Collymore left the company for a “several months” medical leave since mid-October and is currently in the United Kingdom.
“He has started medical leave to receive specialised treatment for a number of months”, said Safaricom chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a in a statement last month.
Safaricom’s chief financial officer Sateesh Kamath and the director of strategy and innovation Joseph Ogutu assumed the responsibility of leading the telecommunications firm in Collymore’s absence.
Safaricom said Kamath would assume the primary duty of running Safaricom while Ogutu will be in charge of the firm’s day-to-day operations until Collymore returns. It is not clear when the CEO will be coming back.
