US Carter Center Calls for Dialogue to End Kenya's Political Crisis

The US Carter Center Election Observation Mission has called on Kenyan political leaders to put their differences aside and engage in dialogue to end the current political crisis in the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, the US-based NGO said only dialogue between leaders could close the gap between the opposition and the ruling party following the October 26th repeat presidential election, boycotted by National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka.

The two pulled out of the repeat poll citing the inability of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a credible election.

In the statement, the Carter Center faults attacks on IEBC and the Judiciary by politicians, saying it undermined the ability of the institutions to carry out their constitutional mandate.

“These problems severely undermined the ability of Kenya’s electoral and judicial institutions to implement the fresh presidential elections. Rather than consolidating support for a national political program, the election polarized the country and exposed the deep tribal and ethnic rifts that have longed characterized its politics,” the statement added.

“In the days ahead, it is incumbent on political leaders to put personal agendas aside and take steps to heal the country while maintaining the country’s constitutional order.”

The Carter Center will release a detailed statement on its overall observation of the election process in the October 26th repeat poll. The Observer group delegation in the country is headed by former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

  1. Dialogue , dialogue wapi,…
Dialogue , dialogue wapi, there is only one govt in Kenya. Any other wild animal creeping in the simba household is a hyena that cannot be trusted. Even Meerkats do not hold dialogues when anyone threatens their territory and refuses to follow common rules and regulations . Even when a male gorilla in the jungles wants to outplay its leaders and seduces the females , it know where it belongs just like the …. meerkat female who thinks it can sneak in something something ha haha. So John Kelly Uhuru is duly elected leader and he does not have to talk with anyone who has called him all manners of names and besides the amnesia guy does not recognize the govt elect . What kind of talks need held, how to share 1/2 mkate or caretaker mogue government . Why negotiate with anyone who hates your guts and wants you to fail with people who care about you .. Uhuru get sworn in and kazi iendeleee………… waiting for it ……….. CAPLOCK dude , Guest1, Doreen – reply with your crude self , your almighty white person is on your side now…

@ F. Guest, “Uhuru get sworn in and kazi iendeleee…………” what are you all waiting for if it was that straight foward, swear him hata leo! Us the Kenyans wan’t to get it right, legally no matter what it takes. No more status quo/corruptions/rigging. wazee suffered for us to gain independence, we are willing to suffer for a honest and transparent cause.

@Guest1 Raila is in town, aren’t you part of entourage? Have they not noticed you with all your work condeming good people on Mwakilishi? Its a shame isn’t it?

“attacks on IEBC and the Judiciary by politicians, saying it undermined the ability of the institutions to carry out their constitutional mandate” Uhuru attacked the supreme court stating that he will, ‘deal with them wakora’ while he was drunk as a skunk and scrutching his rectum. Ruto on the other hand, ” no dialoque until we are swon it.”

  3. Kenyans say No to dialogue. …
Kenyans say No to dialogue. Raila had an opportunity on October 26 but squandered it. I will say it again; If you hang yourself on a tree, and passers-by decline to cut off the rope to let you lose, you cannot blame them. They did not put the noose around your neck; you did it. Raila withdrew; Kenyans elected their president on October 26. As such, no dialogue; Raila must wait for your turn in 2022. Alternatively he can take his NRM to the forest and fight.

  4. John Kelly, let’s first have…
John Kelly, let’s first have a dialogue between Trump and Hillary Clinton over their last year’s Russia-hacked election. How come you never held a dialogue between AlGore and George Bush Jr when their year 2000 election headed for US supreme court. For you guys, your constitution is the final word and the minorities that loose an election know how to give the winner majority a space to lead as they, (minority) wait and try again in the next election. The only dialogue Kenya will ever have again is in the national assembly and that’s why they call it debate in parliament. We don’t need any more of your unsolicited advice. And please, don’t help us the way you helped Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and the way you’ve for decades been helping Somalia, we see the results and we’re not impressed.

  5. The US Carter Center…
The US Carter Center Election Observation Mission should call for dialogue between bickering Democrats and Repubicans that has polarized US popolation more than ever before…. John Kerry should call on Donald Trump to create a PM position for Hillary Clinton to appease the Democrats, After he is done with that then he can fly into Nairobi and mediate talks between Jubilee and NASA.

  6. What will dialogue achieve…
What will dialogue achieve. Let us stop pretending one tribe is determined to hold on to power and refuse to hold fair élections because they know the truth will be unearthed. Now they are confusing you that NASA wants a cohesive government which is not true. This same community is now threatening to fire all the employees from a certain ethnic group because they have boycotted their products. You need to have an objective view. All is not well in Kenya and pretending that everything is fine is not going to improve things.Even the civil societies have sued this government and its imposed president who was elected by one ethnic group. The other tribes are tired and they have valid reasons to protest and be heard. The talk of waiting till 2022 is non negotiable we want change now not petty dialogue that will not change anything.
