IEBC Gazettes Uhuru as President-Elect

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday morning gazetted President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto as winners of the October 26th repeat presidential election.

IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati gazetted the two as winners through gazette notice number 10808, only hours after he declared the two the victors of the poll.

On Monday evening, Uhuru and Ruto were announced as the winner of the fresh election after garnering 7,483,895 votes, which is 98.26 percent of the total votes cast.

The electoral commission went ahead to announce the winner of the poll although IEBC did not conduct the poll in 25 constituencies in Migori, Kisumu, Siaya and Kisumu counties due security fears.

The IEBC however said results from the 25 areas would not affect the final presidential tally, and proceeded to declare the winner.

“Having completed the verification process of all results from the 266 constituencies that voted, and in accordance with Section 55B Article 3, IEBC is certified that results of the elections shall not be affected by voting in the areas where the process was postponed,” said IEBC vice-chair Consolata Nkatha Maina.

Other candidates in the race included Ekuru Aukot (Thirdway Alliance), Abduba Dida (Tunza Alliance), Cyrus Jiringo (UDF) and independent candidates Japheth Kaluyu, Joe Nyaga and Michael Wainaina.

National Super Alliance leader Raila Odinga was also in the ballot, although he had pulled out of the race by writing to the electoral commission two weeks to the October 26th repeat election.
