Nairobi Business Community Makes a Comeback Clad in US Military Gear

After going silent for over a week now, members of the now famous Nairobi Business Community have made a comeback.

Addressing a media briefing at Uhuru Park on Monday, some of members of the group were seen clad in military fatigue. Four of its members were seen dressed in full American military attire including patrol cap, jackets, combat boots and dark shades.

The group’s leader, Wilfred Kamau, urged all Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and vote in Thursday’s repeat presidential election. He said that the group was not opposed to anti-IEBC protests staged by opposition National Super Alliance so long as they were peaceful.

He said their only mission was to guard their businesses in the City Centre. “We are protecting our businesses and the future of our businesses. If the opposition people want to demonstrate, we don’t have any problem. We will only have issue if they destroy our businesses,” warned Mr Kamau.

Last week, a Jubilee women leadership group dubbed Jubilee Women Brigade also appeared in military gear including red berets as they drummed support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection.

The National Police Act states that its illegal for civilians to use military uniform.

Section 101 of the Act states: “Impersonation of police officer or wearing police uniform, etc. (1) A person other than a police officer who, without the written authority of the Inspector-General— (a) puts on or assumes, either in whole or in part, the uniform, name, designation or description of a police officer, or a uniform, name or designation, resembling or intended to resemble the uniform, name or designation of a police officer.”

    American Military Attire?

US Federal laws concerning the wear of the United States Military uniforms by people not on active duty are published in the United States Code (USC).

Specifically, 10 USC, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 45, Sections 771 and 772.

    Section 771 states:

Except as otherwise provided by law, no person except a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, as the case may be, may wear –

    (1) the uniform, or a distinctive part of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps; or

    (2) a uniform any part of which is similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps.

“Except as otherwise provided by law”, means there is an exception. Visit any pawn shop near a military base and you will legally acquire the uniform.

    • You are building mountains…
You are building mountains out of mole hills. Nairobi business community has all the rights to wear jungle fatigue attire just like hunters in the United States do. They may be hunting would be looters of their businesses.

American army uniform is just an attire in Kenya or anywhere else except the US. Kenya police uniform is not uniform in the US, it is just an attire. Better check what you are talking about.

Kenya. This is not just INTIMIDATING; it’s also MILITANT, AGGRESSION, and AGITATING. It began in Kisumu (with Military), then Nakuru (with Waiguru), and now Nairobi (with “Businessmen”). And at least we have seen this (as opposed to Moses Kuria’s Unconfirmed Wild Allegations about Raila).

I agree totally that this is the wrong attire to wear if you are not part of the Kenya Army and then threaten people

guest 1: You must be so idle. Actually I support business community. This hooligans have no business and will take advantage by looting. I would encourage anyone that threatens anyone business, tough women and kids or brutally attack anyone to be shot dead. No need for violence. Even in the US when you have perceived threat you can do so in Self defense. Guest One get out of your comfort zone and join the demonstrations. Anything else you are a coward and no different from your baba ideologies in other wards useless. # bure kabisa
