UN Suspends Operations in Kenya ahead of Next Week's Election

The United Nations has announced suspension of some of its activities in the country ahead of next week’s repeat presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday, Under-Secretary-General Peter Drennan said UN would temporarily put to hold all programmes that are not part of a critical mission to Kenya.

“Upon recent review of the security situation in Kenya, The Designated Official (DO), in consultation with the Security Management Team, has recommended the suspension of all non- programme critical workshops, meetings, seminars, conferences and missions to Kenya at least one week before and one week after the repeat of the presidential election, currently scheduled for 26 October 2017,”.

“I concur with the recommendation of the DO and authorize the suspension of such non-programme critical missions to Kenya for the period 19 October to 02 November 2017,” the statement read in part.

On Thursday, the Government through acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i announced October 26th a public holiday to allow Kenyans vote in the repeat election.

This comes amid political uncertainty in the country ahead of the election, with opposition National Super Alliance threatening to boycott the election unless their demands are met by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

  1. Good for you UN…
    Good for you UN.
If Msando worked for UN he would still be alive and his hand intact.

These elections should be postponed. This IEBC needs to replace almost everyone who works their.

Who wants to work for an organization like IEBC where you either fly out to America to resign like Akombe or you get killed and your hand chopped off?

This IEBC job is like joining a criminal organization, if you leave your either killed or you go to hide in a foreign country.

@Doreen, “This IEBC job is like joining a criminal organization…”

You are right Doreen. What we need at the moment is to postpone the election indefinitely until we reconstitute a truly independent IEBC. We should be able to appoint a neutral person to be the temporary head of state until we vacuum all the dust and remove all the cobwebs that have accumulated in our house (Kenya) since 1963. We cannot continue and lie to ourselves that we are on the right path to justice and that everything is okay in Kenya!

Just look at the characters that were cleared by the IEBC to run for a public elective office! How could people like Sonko and many more others be cleared by the same IEBC with their closets full of skeletons?

Long live our beautiful Republic of Kenya with a new and reconstituted IEBC that will bar candidates with a shady past from running for an elective public office.

@Doreen & Imara- A whole year has gone by due to elections. Postponing elections will just hurt people more. Already people are suffering. Nothing is moving forward. People need to move on with life! It’s not fair to uphold lives for over 40 million people due to political power. It’s not FUN at all to think of moving Election further. It’s traumatizing to wake up everyday and think of Kenya elections. Again, it’s time to move on!

NO, NASAlites have met their water loo… Msado was a sacrificial lamb like many others NASA is trying to sacrifice to attract Local and International sympathy. Regretfully, NASA is so toxic, their dishonesty stinks to high heavens, No one wants to touch them with a ten feet pole. Locals but a few, UN, UK, EU,US,AU Asian continent and individual Nations have said NO to the blood thirsty RAILA.
See all the International observers and their commitment for a peaceful, credible free fair Election on 26th. Under the IEBC and facilitated as per the constitution.
Raila is known for his penchant for Bloodletting”” ask Kalonzo? Is it by coincidence that Kalonzo and Wetangula have given the Raila’ Orengo Genocide geared disruption of the election; Kamkunjis a wide birth???
Raila’s un-thought out withdrawal, was a fatal self-inflicted wound. His Only one last “BULLET” has turned out to be a dangerous recklessness to try grab power by all means. Ballot or bullet style.
The down side, Kenya has a working Government, a resolute Citizenry, and robust constitution. His effort to violate a court order he prayed for at the Supreme Court, His corruption of the Judiciary, threats, intimidation and bribery of IEBC commissioners and staff are just one of his growing desperate moves.
All this will be frustrated, because God will deliver Kenya from the fangs of Satan whose plans to Steal, Kill, and Destroy are meeting a full measure of God’s Grace for the country of Kenya. Let’s all pray, go out and vote, seat back and watch God deliver Victory, Peace and prosperity on and after the 26th October; for the Glory and honor of his Name AMEN.

  5. They know the current…
They know the current political climate is not conducive or élections and they know what to do.Flee as usual always looking out for their own while claiming that IEBC has done a good job and élections will be free and fair
