US Reacts to Raila's Withdrawal from Presidential Contest

An official working in the State Department says that United States regrets the decision by National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga to withdraw from the repeat presidential election set for October 26th.

Speaking to Daily Nation, the officer, however, said that US respects the move by the opposition leader, adding that Odinga was free to travel to the US.

There were reports by a section of the Kenya media this week that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader has been denied a visa to travel to the United States. The reports quoted State House Director of Digital Communications Dennis Itumbi.

“It is our understanding that nothing prevents Raila Odinga from getting on a plane and flying to the United States.” the official told Daily Nation‘s Kevin J. Kelly.

Raila is currently in the Unites Kingdom, where he will deliver a lecture at Chatham House, Royal Institute of International Affairs on Friday.

“We remain committed to supporting a free, fair and credible election that is consistent with Kenya’s Constitution, current laws, and institutions,” the State Department official said.

“We respect the right of Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga and deputy presidential candidate Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka to withdraw from the Kenyan election scheduled for October 26, but we regret their decision to do so,” the official added.
