The country could be treated to a fresh round of showdown between the Raila-led National Super Alliance (NASA) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after it became clear that the commission has rejected a number of demands by the opposition outfit.
The IEBC appears to have thrown out at least six of the 11 “irreducible minimums” conditions the opposition tabled before it, for them to take part in the repeat elections.
Despite demands by Nasa to have Dubai-based Al Ghurair blocked from printing presidential ballot papers, IEBC has already given it a go ahead to print the ballots.
Similarly, French biometrics firm, OT-Morpho will supply technology for election results transmission, which Nasa was against.
It is also evident that IEBC secretariat members led by Chief Executive Ezra Chiloba will not be leaving office as Raila-led alliance demanded. Giant, mobile service provider, Safaricom has also been contracted to provide network for election transmission system.
Nasa had accused Safaricom of colluding with other firms to bungle the nullified August 8th election in favor of President Uhuru.
Nasa has also demanded that Jubilee drops the proposed amendments and hiring of new returning officers in the 291 constituencies, but it appears these demands would not met.
NASA has already threatened to stage nationwide protests every Monday and Friday to force IEBC give in to their demands.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Vihiga on Saturday, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga maintained there would be no elections, unless their demands are met.
In a statement to the press, NASA campaign leader Musalia Mudavadi accused IEBC of ignoring their demands and going ahead to contract firms that bungled August 8th polls.
“We wish to reiterate that IEBC lacks good faith and is still hell bent on committing crimes against Kenyans in collusion with OT-Morpho. As this contract demonstrates, we cannot expect free, fair, credible and verifiable elections conducted in conformity with the Constitution and the Laws of Kenya,” Mudavadi said.
