Kenyans 70 Years or Older Get Sh6.5 Billion in Monthly Stipend, Medical Cover

Kenyans aged 70 years and above will from January receive a monthly pay and free medical cover, irrespective of their income level after the Cabinet on Thursday allocated Sh6.5 billion for the program.

The monthly stipend to the elderly is part of the plan by the government to ease their suffering. The program will see the elderly get a National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) cover, which will cost taxpayers Sh500 monthly for each individual.

A similar program by President Uhuru’s administration initiated in 2012 targeted Kenyans above 65 years living in extreme poverty.

Statistics indicate that better healthcare has seen life expectancy in the country rise even as the elderly lack a pension plan. It gets worse if they live in urban areas where the cost of living is quite high.

Kenya currently has about 774,000 people aged 70 and above, figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) show.

A report by World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2015 estimated life expectancy in Kenya at 63 years.
