Newly elected Kisumu governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o has alleged that there is mass murder for Kisumu residents by police.
Nyong’o has called on the government and the international community to help put to an end the “genocide” of his people.
The Governor on Monday said that 171 residents were harassed and mishandled by police during post-election protests and that several people are still missing.
Nyong’o said he launched investigations into the matter, but the victims are scared and timid. He said that unknown officers dressed in police uniforms raided homes at night, heavily armed and behaving like militia and wrecked havoc on residents.
The County boss further claimed that the officers ransacked houses, crashed phones , clobbered people, ate their food, injured and sexual assaulted them, destroyed kiosks and stole property.
“At the moment we know at least 17 people died. People are looking for their bodies. We discovered one at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga morgue with two bullet wounds, showing quite clearly he was shot and that the bullet came out through the back,” he said on NTV.
“We are still doing investigations. There is a strong force to keep people from knowing the truth but I appeal to the Kenyan government and international community…there is genocide in Kisumu.
“When you kill people and put them in mass graves and then you exhume them and take them to the lake, that is genocide or repression of genocidal tendencies.”
Nyanza deputy regional coordinator Kalicha Roba has, however, denied reports the body retrieved from Lake Victoria had bullet wounds saying the victim drowned.
“Officers who collected the body examined it keenly and found it had no such injuries,” he said.
“We appeal to those with vital information on the death to report to police who are investigating the matter.”
Nyong’o said he has invited forensic experts to examine the cause of victim’s death.
