Residents Protest Over Preparations for President Uhuru Tour to Murang’a

Residents of Maragua in Murang’a County were infuriated by preparations being made ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign tour in the county on Wednesday.The irate residents blocked roads leading to the town, bringing business to a standstill for the better part of Tuesday morning, demanding for the re-carpeting of the road leading to the small town.

Trouble began when they learned that potholes on the road were only being filled for President Uhuru smooth ride to the town, after which they will be left to endure the bad state of the road.

Police were forced to intervene, and lodged teargas canisters on the protesting residents as boda boda operators and traders stand stilled operations in the town until midday.

Peter Njoroge, a resident, accused local leaders of wanting to blindfold the head of state that they were performing, by filling the potholes on the road filling the potholes. According to the residents, Deputy President William Ruto directed repairs on the road last year but they were never done. “Our administrators assured us that the road is set to be rehabilitated in the next financial year,” Njoroge said.

President Uhuru will lead his brigade to sell his reelection bid in the region that is one of his key strongholds, and will address a series of rallies in major shopping centers and towns in the County.
