Former anti-corruption boss John Githongo may find himself preparing for a legal battle after former Kilome Member of Parliament, John Harun Mwau sued him for allegedly linking him to the global narcotics trade.

The move was necessitated an article Githongo published on a German non-profit investigative journalism website Correctiv.org.  in 2015.

In the petition, the former lawmaker accuses Githongo and two journalists—Lorenzo Bagnoli and Lorenzo Bodrero — of conspiring to tarnish his reputation through the publication by linking him to the drugs trade.

The former Kilome Constituency legislator further accuses the trio of implying that he was the owner of two drug consignments worth $278 million (Sh28 billion) nabbed by Australian authorities on the Kenyan coast.

“The defendants fabricated the false and defamatory article intentionally to cause right-thinking members of society around the world to treat Mwau with contempt and ridicule as the article read as a whole is defamatory and injurious to the plaintiff and his family,” the suit filed at Milimani Law Courts reads.

Mwau wants to compel the court to determine how much he should be paid in compensation for the damage caused to his name and his family by the article.

However, none of the three defendants has responded to the suit filed at Milimani Law Courts.
