Kenya has signed bilateral labor agreements with some countries as part of the government’s efforts to boost labor export.
The countries include the United Kingdom, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Labor Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui said the agreements are aimed at ensuring that Kenyan migrant workers in these countries are offered better terms and conditions of service.
He indicated that the UK relaxed requirements for Kenyans seeking employment there under its new immigration rules.
As a result, graduate teachers, engineers, accountants, financial specialists, and graduates from technical institutions such as electricians, plumbers, and builders are now eligible to work in the UK.
“Those required include employees for the train metro service such as ticketing and cleaning. The UK requires over 100,000 long-haul drivers,” Chelugui said in a report tabled before parliament.
He told the parliamentary committee on Labor and Welfare Service that the UK lowered requirements for job applicants to a minimum A level or a degree level, thereby opening up more employment opportunities for Kenyans.
Chelugui said Kenya is seeking to become a major labor exporter to compete with countries such as Egypt.
“There are many job opportunities in the UK because most of the other nationals who were working there have left,” said Chelugoi.
To call Kenya a labor…
To call Kenya a labor exporter is to say that we produce employees for other countries for foreign exchange. It would appear that we “intentionally” dont create jobs in Kenya so that, the “excess”unemployed could be sent to other countries that have excess jobs.
Of course its agreat idea to have our unemployed, employed somewhere. But its better for the to do so when they also have a choice of working in the country as well.Otherwise, we are just filling aneed for other countries, and once that need is fulfilled, we go back to square one.Solution=Create our own jobs.

Maxiley, it basics means that the masses are doing what pertains to them, but the politicians are failing us.
Take a look at USA with the most immigrants in the world. We work, we pay taxes. We own businesses and help employ more folks…OPPORTUNITIES..AND HARD WORK.

I think the short cut to…
I think the short cut to improving our economy and creating jobs in Kenya is opening up our economy to allow more investors into the country. The foreign investors come with the technology, the skills and the management. Our challenge will be to increase the speed of our learning effort in these foreign industries so that we can over time take over the technology, skills and management of the industries.

@Kim we have some huge…
@Kim we have some huge bottlenecks to development in the form of unnecessary regulations and bureaucracy, corruption at all levels and a very bloated government. Kenyans are smart and enterprising – witness the fact that they survived for 24 years under Moi and have moved into Middle Income Country status. Am not sure they’ll survive Ruto which is why I think we need someone like Mutua or Kibwana

Meghan destroying the Royal inbreeding that lasted thousands of years has inadvertently opened doors for Kenya labor. Arabs and Indians have dominated the Empire for too long except in soccer

Reminds me of old many days of substituting government obligations with harambees. Dislike a case of sending your kids you can’t feed to your neighbors to feed them
They only relax Visa…
They only relax Visa requirements when they have a national interest , This time they need trained nurses from Kenya and hence relaxing Visa requirements. Not long ago, the same UK did not want Kenyans going to their country – reason, Covid!
