The White House is currently working on a new immigration policy that may increase visas for highly-skilled workers.
The merit-based immigration proposal is reportedly being formulated by White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and will be submitted to President Donald Trump next week.
Sources privy to the plan say Trump may adopt the proposal as his official position or prefer to send it back for amendments.
However, the sources say the new plan does not recommend ways to address minors who came to the US illegally and who are protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), or immigrants with Temporary Protected Status.
Helping Kushner draft the proposal are White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett and policy adviser Stephen Miller.
Trump has been advocating for a stringent policy on immigration and is pushing for a wall to be erected on the US-Mexico border to prevent people who have fled Central American nations from entering the country.
The US business community has called for an increase in visas for highly-skilled people to attract more workers from abroad for specialized jobs, a proposal Trump has supported.
“The immigration plan would either leave the number of highly skilled visas each year at the same level or raise it slightly,” the sources said.
The team working on the new plan has reviewed immigration systems used in other countries such as Canada and Australia as possible models for the Trump effort.
“It [the new policy] will also address asylum laws to take account of Trump’s desire to reduce the number of people who overstay their visas,” the sources added.

@ Ndugu Imara Daima,Ufisadi unatumaliza in all sectors of our undertakings.I love sports,particularly athletics.The other day commenting on Asbel Kiprop’s ban for doping,I said that we have alot of marathon runners, that if we ban the dopers,we shall still have ahefty representation. I also mentioned that, these athletes despite education,and awareness,plus the risk they dont seem to listen.
Today another high profile Kenyan has failed dope test.He was to run in the London marathon due this Sunday.In away,its good he was caught before the race,which is still bad enough ofcourse.
Like Isaid in the previous post, they can cheat in Kenya,and bribe their way through,but when they hit the international stage,its hard to escape.Yes It has happened. Ibrahim Kiptum,the world champion in half marathon is the culprit.And yes,he has heard all these preachings against doping but he did it.
And yes we should give marathon dopers a life ban.Consider this; for the RIO marathon selection, 0ver 410 kenyan runners had qualifying time, but as you know only 3 are taken.So you see, if we ban them for life, we still have many to select our team from.
Personally, I dont understand why our leaders talk of fighting corruption,but employing toothless dogs to bite the culprits.If we are serious about eradicating corruption, lets start with banning dopers for life.They can still seek livelihood from other sources.My two cents.
It is not a perfect…
It is not a perfect situation but if you have to migrate to feed your family or to chase a dream, that is your choice and no one should know better than you. As much as there is some truth about not landing an ideal job in America, I also know people who have build empires doing what many refer to as “menial”. I also know that there if one is strategic about their relocation, you can also build a career in America. Ngugi wa Thiongo is professor in the US and Lupita is an A-List actor. There are thousands of Kenyans/Africans who have succeeded in the US but I guess it’s a bigger story if you find your former headmaster working at a nursing home.
As far as discrimination, I would say this bothered me as child when I learned
about slavery and the struggles of black Americans in their own country…and then I grew up and now see how Kenyans wanachuki ya ukabila. Hata mwafrika wa Africa Kusini hates his African brother. We human beings are very evil toward one another and if your dream is to work at an organization that is in America, like NASA and you fail to pursue that because ati kuna racism, then you need to pause and rethink your life choices.
One thing I see over and over and it is true when relocating to another country or even within Kenya is having a plan, a plan B, identifying a solid strategy to get there. Also very important, associate with like-minded people and you become like them. For example, many people who believe an immigrant can only work as a nurse assistant do exactly that for 20yrs, however, those who hang around go-getters quickly learn how to navigate America, and quickly rise up. That is the main reason you see Kenyans across America are so segregated, usually depending on , where you can find 90% are nurse aide lakini ukienda another city, kuna nurses wengi, then another city kuna watu wa IT, another in another city many engineers na mabankers.
I agree about brain-drain. I have seen India and China, and some Arab countries match or over-pay their citizens if they return to their countries in the same capacity to work. Not sure when Kenya will realize this is one way to poach back.
