President William Ruto has recognized the immense potential of the film industry within his nation.
His viewpoint was sparked during his recent visit to the renowned Tyler Perry Studios in the United States, a colossal 134-hectare (330-acre) production facility valued at a staggering Sh37 billion ($280 million). Ruto humbly acknowledges his misjudgment about Kenya’s film industry while reflecting on his past scepticism towards his daughter’s aspirations in film-making. The Head of State apologized to his daughter, admitting she had been correct in her pursuit, while he had mistakenly doubted her ambitions eight years ago.
The tour of Tyler Perry Studios proved to be a transformative experience for Ruto, profoundly impacting his perspective on the film industry’s vast potential for growth. He recognises the inherent resources and talents within Kenya and pledges to actively promote the sector. Inspired by the success of Tyler Perry Studios, Ruto envisions a similar trajectory for Kenya’s film industry. With concerted efforts and a strategic approach, he believes the nation can harness its existing resources to catalyze a remarkable transformation of the industry.
Ruto also extended an invitation to Emmy Award-winning TV host Steve Harvey, inviting him to engage with Kenya’s local film industry. Harvey is scheduled to visit the country in September and serve as the chief guest during the Independence Day celebrations in December. Moreover, Ruto ambitiously proposed hosting the prestigious Grammy Awards in Kenya, envisioning the iconic Masai Mara as a breathtaking backdrop for the event. Ruto’s commitment to fostering growth in the film industry extends beyond mere rhetoric.
During his visit to the United States, he met with business leaders and actively encouraged them to capitalize on the tax incentives provided by his administration to support start-ups. This initiative reflects a broader vision for Kenya’s economic development, positioning the film industry as a catalyst for diverse opportunities.
