I Failed KCSE: Larry Madowo Shares Success Story Beyond Bad Grades
Renowned Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo

Renowned Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo has taken to Instagram to share a remarkable personal story amid the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

Madowo has taken to Instagram to showcase an enthralling video of his remarkable travels to 27 countries in 2023. He reveals that his KCSE exam results had not been stellar, earning him a B- grade. He says that this academic setback sparked speculations about him potentially repeating Form 4. Madowo emphasizes the significance of not making judgments solely based on one’s grade and injects a hint of humour by expressing doubt that anyone would watch the entire video recap on his Instagram page.

“I ‘failed’ KCSE, but I did 45 foreign trips last year – 27 countries. My B- was so bad I was pushed to repeat Form 4! Mtu asikupimie hewa. Nobody will watch this recap to the end anyway,” writes Madowo.

Madowo’s message coincides with Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu’s announcement of the 2023 KCSE results, which reveal that 1,216 candidates achieved straight As, showing a slight increase from the previous year. Madowo’s journey in the field of journalism, which commenced when he was merely 20 years old at Kenya Television Network (KTN), serves as a constant reminder that academic grades are not the sole determinants of one’s success. Irrespective of his KCSE grades, Madowo has forged his path upwards, working for NTV Kenya and CNBC Africa, ultimately securing the esteemed position of the BBC’s Business Editor for Africa.

Once a correspondent for the British Broadcaster during the 2020 US presidential election, he subsequently transitioned to join the CNN team. Along his educational path, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Daystar University and a master’s degree in Business and Economics Journalism from Columbia University in New York.
