Several Asylum Seekers on the Streets of Canada

Every month, many Kenyans leave their home country in search of better opportunities and a better life for their families.

While some immigrants manage to successfully establish themselves in foreign lands, others fail to thrive in their newly found homes. Recent reports have revealed that a large number of Kenyans who sought refuge in Canada are now among hundreds of immigrants living on the streets of various Canadian cities. Many of these immigrants are unable to return to Kenya due to delays in passport processing. The reasons for leaving Kenya vary, but many are driven by the quest for better opportunities as a result of the steep cost of living in their home country.

The Kenyans departed their home country evading societal stigma and hoping to embrace a fresh start in Canada. However, their expectations have not been met as Canada is also struggling with a housing crisis, leaving both immigrants and citizens homeless. Reverend Alexa Gilmour of the Protestant United Church of Canada in Ontario helps those who are living on the streets by providing them with food, clothing, and other necessities.

Most of the immigrants she has encountered are from Kenya and cite economic challenges and high living costs as their reason for moving. Canada has processed over 60,000 asylum seeker applications since January 2023 with the influx of immigrants largely attributed to the increasing conflicts in several countries worldwide. Asylum applicants are often left stranded without basic necessities as was the case with a Kenyan immigrant who arrived in Canada in July. He was shocked to find that he could not obtain shelter and was forced to sleep on the street for two days.

Reverend Alexa states that, most of the immigrants she encountered cite economic challenges and high living costs as their reason for moving…I dont know about Canada, but I believe that in USA,and infact most countries, seeking asylum for economic reasons makes your chances of getting it very minimal -almost zero. That said, they should not lose hope.Man made laws are not etched in stone.Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Could we please get aword from the Embassy on this matter? At least some sort of advise for those who might be in such situations in future…

Our country is currently better to live in than many foreign countries, so why leave it to be a squatter in foreign countries?!?

I have heard that it is virtually impossible to survive in Canada as an undocumented immigrant or as my neighbor Shiku says, someone without “makware”. Mimi sihami Kibera nitaendelea na biashara yangu ya kibanda sipendi kulala barabarani Canada kwa hiyo snow mimi husikia.

The American dream is becoming far fetched.

COHO (continent of human origins) LEADERS:

What happened to your basic human conscience? People from COHO are drowning in the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life in Europe (where they are not wanted or welcome) when you lead very ostentatious life styles devoid of basic human conscience?

@Maxiley, I’m still trying to get over the cost of living part. Admittedly I don’t live in Canada but in Colorado, and here if your money is short your problems are tall.

  8. Canada is aping other G7…
Canada is aping other G7 countries competing for young immigrants since they have more pets than children and they need a young able workforce to flip burgers and clean their bottoms in their homes if lucky or in the nursing homes yet they are clueless or just plain unwilling on what to do with the immigrants once they arrive. You have Ukrainians going back home because they refuse to sleep on the street. The immigration system is overwhelmed yet they refuse to stop bringing in more people worse are those you tubers spreading myths that it is the land of milk and honey.Far from it a cold an uninhabitable tundra most of the population is concentrated in 3 provinces competing for the few resources available housing is mediocre at best cases of new comers living in bedbug infested apartments is common and good luck landing that job unless you are a nurse institutionalized racism is the order of the day.Doctors from the Middle East and even Nigerians are taxi drivers all because this racist country refuses to acknowledge their credentials.

I look at this as decade of hard struggle for the oppressed people trying they best to bring the stolen money back to their respective country. Though the same leaders of they country’s Govt term it as Remittance Revenue, which is monthly monitored closely and encouraged for.

  10. This is indeed a dichotomy…
This is indeed a dichotomy of grand propotion. At one time many years ago,Mzungu was capturing africans and forcing them to cross the oceans, and land in strange places as slaves, offering free labour, under inhumane conditions.
Fist forward to today. Mwafrica is now willingly offering himself to the same places that his ancestors worked for free, but mzungu has put down strict rules for him to land there. Basically Mwafrica is not “invited”.Strange.
