A Kenyan man who lives on the streets in the UK and survives on begging for food and cash on the streets of Luton, United Kingdom seeks help to return home.
In the video captured and shared on Facebook by Bancy Wairimu Mbui, a Kenyan woman living in the UK, the man identified as Dan Mutungi says he cannot return home since he lost his documents, including his passport. Mbui asks the Kenyan government to intervene and help Mutungi return home.
“This guy is a Kenyan based in the UK, Luton to be specific, I cry to Uhuru and his government to help him to go back home as he is leaving on the street begging, it is really sad,” Ms. Mbui says in a post on Facebook.
Mutungi allegedly moved to the UK in 1992 and has since become homeless and survives on begging on the streets of Luton.
In a short conversation with Mbui, Mutungi says he is from Machakos and admits to using drugs in the past. “I am Dan Mutungi from Machakos, my mother is not alive but my father is in Kenya living in Machakos, I came here in 1992 and I have never gone back home,” he says.
“In five years, I have not used any drugs,” he adds.
An article by Luton Today indicates that Mutungi was fined £165 on December 16th, 2016 for begging.
“Daniel Mutungi of Noah’s Enterprise in Park Street was caught begging for alms in a passageway in George Street, Luton on July 12. He was charged partly under the 1824 Vagrancy Act. He must pay £50 plus £85 court costs and £30 victim services charge after being found guilty in his absence at Luton Magistrates on December 6,” the article reads in part.

Mutungi want food and…
Mutungi want food and shelter, but Ms Mbui would like him to return home. This is similar to the Manjanja’s case in Atlanta where the reporter used him to get fame, but refused to assist. All Ms. Wambui could have done is to assist Mutungi to get to the embassy and file a 2 page application for travelling documents. He does not need a passport.
This dude needs mental…
This dude needs mental health treatment and rehabilitation first. The way he is talking he will get to Kenya and get into drugs and kumi kumi.

What an opportunistic video…
What an opportunistic video taker! Even the author of this article is taking advantage of this poor guy. The guy did not mention anything about wanting to go back to Kenya. Shame on both of you!!!

No one should have to go…
No one should have to go through the demeaning and patronizing attitude of this Bancy lady. She has all figured out what the guy needs having condescendingly interrogated him. What a shame that even in her authoritative, arrogant and inquisitive voice she could not find in her heart a reason to give (at least within the window of that clip). You could see the man’s glow and demeanor fade as the line of questioning progressed. Thanks but no thanks Bancy lady you missed a step in trying to do “some good”
Open a go fund page and I…
Open a go fund page and I will help him out. Hataki kurudi nyumbani, machakos. Anataka chakula na pahali pa Kulala. Asaidiwe kupata kazi huko London. Theres better opportunities there than kenya.
Seriously sasa. Arudi Kenya…
Seriously sasa. Arudi Kenya kufanya nini? Mnafaa kumsaidia kupata kazi huko London. Jeez. Hakuna opportunity nyingi kenya. Help him get his papers first. That interview lady needs a slap
Those of you who insist that…
Those of you who insist that the most pressing need for this guy is a place to stay and/or food must have interpreted the video differently. First of, he has run into legal problems, doesn’t seem coherent maybe because of challenges in life and his admitting to previous drug use and he has no documents. The best place for him is back in Kenya where he can be absorbed into family. His dad is still alive for heaven’s sake. I have seen a few people’s fortunes change from homelessness, drug use and alcoholism in the US to dignity in Kenya. My dad’s cousin was homeless in the states for years and he managed to get travel documents and find his way back to Kenya. He has had his own Kiosk now for 7 years somewhere in Kabete and living a much more dignified life than his last years in the US.
@Nani, don’t patronise us…
@Nani, don’t patronise us ndugu! We understood the clip well. Whether the guy is under the influence is neither here nor there in my humble opinion! The woman’s attitude and tone of voice is void of empathy, insisting: “si urudi kwenyu!”. That hit a nerve, do you know how many times some racist so and so pulls this card on us, only they are normally white?. “Why don’t you go back where you come from!?” they often spit. If I collected a pound for every time I have heard this, I would be millionaire. To hear a sister mirror this language to a brother is a bit much!
Bancy is the kind of Kenyan…
Bancy is the kind of Kenyan female in the diaspora that you don’t want in your business. Listening to her condescending tone gives me the impression she will laugh in your face while faking sympathy to someone in need. The way she walked into that conversation was absolutely tacky, shameful and uncalled for.
Bancy Wairimu, you are not the Home office in Luton. You do not dictate where this guy goes. Hope Dan goes to a food-bank or a shelter in Luton.
She’s looking down on him because he is down on his luck, nobody knows how he got into drugs, don’t judge the present without understanding the foundation of how things started.
