Roselyn Akombe Resumes Her Job at the UN in New York, Barred from Speaking to Media

Two weeks after her controversial resignation from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), former electoral commission commissioner Dr Roselyn Akombe has reported back to her job at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

While confirming her return to UN job, Dr. Akombe, who announced her exit from the commission about a week to the October 26th repeat presidential election, however, said he had been barred from addressing the media.

“Yes, I’m back at my old job but I’m prohibited from talking to the press. This was contained in the new contract I signed recently,” she told the Nation‘s Chris Wamalwa.

Speaking to the Nation earlier, the ex-commissioner confessed there have been increased pressure on her bosses at the UN by Kenyan authorities both Kenya and in the US pushing for her sacking for allegedly “betraying” her country.

Before taking up the IEBC job, Akombe was working with the UN in New York City as a political advisor. She took a one year leave to serve the electoral commission in Kenya.

In her letter of resignation, Akombe said it had become impossible for IEBC to hold a credible repeat presidential election following the nullification of August 8th poll by the Supreme Court.

“The commissioners can’t agree on anything and if they did, chances are that the decisions made would be ignored by the secretariat. In the end, you end up going round and round without making any meaningful decisions.” She said.

She added that the commission had been captured by politicians, which crippled its operations.

“Decisions are made somewhere else and passed on for ratification and implementation. Commissioners and senior staff at the secretariat are put in line through bribery and threats. If you don’t agree with them then your life is in danger,” she said.

      Her allegedly involvement with allegedly STD carrying Orengo meant she was supposed to undergo STD tests before being re-hired as required by the law. One can only assume she went through the process but the results are confidential, Did she sign a certificate of good conduct since the press had accused her of been a call girl for IEBC?. That is something UN ought to let public know since UN is a public entity. Her re-hiring also raises some integrity questions with UN. UN Charter requires it to only hire non-partisan people. Akombe is not one. As Raila stated recently she is a member of his NASA Party which is a resistance movement NASA’s declared doctrine is to overthrow a legitimately elected government of Kenya. Since Kenya is a member of the United Nations and Akombe is a member of NASA her hiring with it contradicts the very charter it professes to adhere to. Akombe is a controversial figure. She wants us to believe she has supervised elections in many parts of the World including Afghanistan without any security glince until she is called to supervise it in Kenya and Kenyans becomes worse than Talibans. Since when Kenya became worse than Afghanistan in security terms? Is she trying to tell us Kenyan are worse than Afghanistan Talibans? This woman is a traitor!!! Whenever her name appears in the news she can expect us to tear her apart. That is a declaration she better believe in.

    Nothing that comes from this kikombe mouth is truthful. A taint of deceitful and betrayal to our country should not be a reflection of UN.. she ought to be fired.         We could use the information to improve but I think other countries are just as corrupt but they hide it. In US for example lobbying which is perfectly legal is a good example and also privatization of prisons.

    @Omolo, I stand to be corrected, but I do believe your employers can gag one from matters they feel can undermine their credibility. It’s normally seen where there has been a payout and the deal is sealed with conditions, e.g a gag is often applied. I could be wrong, but this is my understanding.

    Why the hate against this woman. Is it because she had choices which most of you do not have. Wacheni wivu. She exposed what was going on in the IEBC. Kenyans deserved to know the truth that is another reason why majority stayed away the second time around as they knew the IEBC could not be trusted. She was the whistleblower and she had somewhere to run kudos to her. Imagine if other whistleblowers had her choices maybe there would be hope for Kenya which is suffering under corruption.

    These organization have code of conduct and a personal opinion has no place in the official functions of the organization. Because of personal agenda, she traded for a job, an opportunity to serve and touch her people, leadership and role model to the youth? Needless to say, majority of diaspora professionals world over seek opportunities to contribute and give back to their communities and countries, through skills, experiences and networks they have established in host nations. After fifteen, twenty, thirty years, these contracts do not mean much but one’s contribution to society will be like a monument eked in the memories of their peoples-commoners or mighty.
