The changing lifestyles of consumers are pushing the leading supermarket chains in Nairobi and other major cities to offer 24-hour operations.
This shift, primarily driven by increasing urbanization, demanding work schedules, and a growing emphasis on convenience, has gained particular momentum in Nairobi and other major urban centers. The entry of international retail chains has established new service benchmarks compelling local supermarkets to expand their operating hours to remain competitive. At the forefront of this retail evolution are prominent chains including Naivas, Quickmart, and Carrefour. Naivas Supermarket has recently strengthened its market presence by inaugurating its second establishment in Nairobi’s Kilimani on Wood Avenue, bringing its nationwide store count to 107.
According to Naivas Chief of Strategy Andreas Von Paleske, this expansion is a direct response to consumer demands and reflects the company’s commitment to providing flexible shopping alternatives. The organization has strategically initiated round-the-clock operations at select locations in Westlands and Kilimani, areas characterized by high foot traffic and mixed-use development. The emergence of the gig economy has substantially contributed to this operational shift with the increased night-time activity observed by ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt indicating a broader transformation in urban mobility patterns and lifestyle preferences.
Naivas Operations Manager Cyrus Mathenge emphasized that the decision to establish another outlet in Kilimani was influenced by the area’s population growth and increasing consumer demand. The company’s expansion plans extend to new locations in Hurlingham, Tilisi, and Mavoko, while competitor Quickmart has also extended operating hours at its busiest locations, particularly in densely populated residential areas. This transition in Kenya’s retail sector particularly benefits diverse consumer groups, including late-working professionals, time-constrained parents, and those who prefer shopping during less crowded hours.
The implementation of 24-hour operations has generated additional employment opportunities, necessitating increased staffing for night shifts. Simultaneously, retailers have enhanced security measures, including improved lighting, surveillance systems, and security personnel deployment to ensure a safe shopping environment.
