Odinga Considers Withdrawing AUC Bid Amid Political Tensions in Kenya

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed his willingness to withdraw his African Union Commission (AUC) bid.

Speaking in Dubai, Odinga has affirmed his intent to withdraw from the race if his candidacy is being used to manipulate him at the expense of Kenya’s stability. Odinga has reiterated his refusal to engage in dialogue with President William Ruto’s administration until justice is served for the young Kenyans who lost their lives during anti-government protests. He vehemently denies allegations of accepting bribes from the Kenya Kwanza administration in exchange for supporting a government of national unity, dismissing such claims as entirely false.

Odinga’s statements aim to quell rumours of political manipulation and address speculations about internal divisions within his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. These rumours have been fueled by criticism from within ODM, notably from Siaya Governor James Orengo, who characterizes the decision to dialogue with Ruto’s government as a betrayal to those who died during the Finance Bill protests. Odinga now aligns himself with Orengo’s sentiment, reaffirming his commitment to seeking justice for the victims of police brutality before engaging in government-initiated talks.

Furthermore, Odinga has demanded that President Ruto reinstate the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and abolish the proposed Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). He has also insisted on the prosecution of security personnel involved in atrocities against peaceful protesters. The opposition leader’s statement comes amid ongoing political tensions and speculation about potential shifts in Kenya’s political landscape. It also coincides with recent cabinet appointments by President Ruto which appear to create a government representative of all Kenyans.

However, reports suggest that some remaining positions may be intended for opposition members, a prospect that has seemingly divided the opposition camp. Despite the domestic political challenges, Odinga’s bid for the AUC Chairperson position has gained significant traction internationally having sought support from various African leaders and countries. In early July, Odinga secured the backing of South Sudan President Salva Kiir who pledged to rally the East African Community (EAC) to vote as a bloc in his favour. This support is crucial, as the EAC’s unified backing could substantially enhance Odinga’s prospects in the AUC elections.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has been a key advocate for Odinga’s candidacy, urging EAC member states to support him. Mudavadi has emphasized Odinga’s track record and commitment to advancing Africa’s interests globally, highlighting his visionary leadership and experience as qualities that make him well-suited for the AUC Chairperson role. Odinga’s campaign has involved extensive shuttle diplomacy with the former Prime Minister meeting diplomats and leaders across the continent. His efforts have garnered support from several African countries including Malawi and Zambia.

The Kenyan government has demonstrated its commitment to Odinga’s bid by establishing a dedicated secretariat to coordinate his campaign activities. However, the race for the AUC Chairperson position is expected to be highly competitive with Odinga facing competition from other candidates including Somalia’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Adam.
