Azimio leader Raila Odinga has sought to dispel concerns that his potential role as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) would signify his withdrawal from Kenyan politics.
Addressing supporters at the second International Investment Conference in Homa Bay, Odinga reassured them of his continued commitment to the country’s interests. He emphasized his intention to maintain a presence in Kenyan affairs, stating, “I am not planning to leave and will remain present.” Odinga expressed confidence in his ability to juggle both the continental and national spheres, highlighting his efforts to gather support for his candidacy during visits to various African nations, including Uganda where he met with President Yoweri Museveni.
He asserted that his responsibilities at the AU would not consume his entire focus. Odinga’s announcement of his interest in the AU role sparked speculation regarding a potential leadership vacuum in the opposition should he assume the continental role. However, he countered these concerns by firmly declaring, “We are unbwogable, unpangwarable, and unshakable,” indicating the continued strength of the opposition.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly endorsed the coalition leader’s pursuit of the AUC position. Kalonzo describes it as a prime opportunity for the region to secure significant continental representation. He cites Odinga’s extensive qualifications, including his experience as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure, and his widespread recognition across Africa.
Emphasizing Odinga’s commitment to decentralization and pan-Africanism, Kalonzo reassures the public that “the opposition would remain intact” even if Odinga assumes the AU role. Notably, Kalonzo mentions that support for Odinga’s aspirations extends beyond party lines, with President Ruto and other leaders across Africa expressing their backing. Kalonzo condemns the spread of misinformation by some politicians regarding the AU position, accusing them of attempting to sow discord. He emphasizes that Odinga requires the collective support of all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, regardless of their political affiliation.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga are pushing to address the long-standing challenge of achieving the two-thirds gender rule in Kenya. This principle, aimed at ensuring equitable representation of women in government, has been unsuccessfully pursued ten times in the past. The renewed effort comes in the wake of a report compiled by a Multi-Sectoral Working Group established by President Ruto. This group, formed in line with his campaign promise, was tasked with developing a framework for implementing the gender requirement.
Before the report’s presentation in the National Assembly, several crucial meetings were held, including one between Mr Odinga and Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa on Tuesday. Also, the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco), created jointly by Dr Ruto and Mr Odinga following protests against the government last year had voiced its support for implementing the two-thirds gender rule. Notably, Nadco’s report advocating for the same principle has already been adopted by Parliament. These developments suggest a potential turning point in achieving the long-elusive goal of gender parity in Kenyan governance.
