Investigators are currently retracing the recent activities and conversations of the doctor who was discovered dead at Nakuru Level Five Hospital over the weekend.
Laban Kiptoo, a 26-year-old intern physician assigned to the Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Maternity wing, was discovered lifeless in a trench by security guards at 7 am. Dr. Kiptoo had been on duty on Friday before his unfortunate demise. According to a colleague and close friend, they had a conversation on Friday where Dr Kiptoo mentioned having a patient in the maternity wing’s theatre. Around 6 pm, he informed her that he had completed his responsibilities. Later, at 8 pm, he messaged her on WhatsApp, sharing his plans to attend a rugby game at Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday morning.
“We conversed until 11 pm. I was exhausted and ended up falling asleep. I woke up around 4.45 am and decided to reply to some of his messages from the previous night, but received no response. I became concerned but decided to call him later so we could talk,” shares the anonymous friend who wishes to remain unidentified due to the sensitive nature of the situation. His sudden absence on Friday night caused panic and fear among his coworkers. His friend, who expected him to let her know about his plans like he always did, was taken aback by his sudden disappearance.
“On Saturday morning, I was completely taken aback by the news of his passing. A friend reached out to inform me that they had found his lifeless body in a trench. It’s been quite difficult for me to process this heartbreaking event,”
Dr. Kiptoo, a recent graduate of Medicine and Surgery from Egerton University had been working as an intern at Nakuru Level Five Hospital since August 2023. He lived on the hospital premises. Those who gathered at the hospital to express their grief and demand answers for his untimely demise remember him as a friendly, modest, and compassionate person.
“We worked hard to provide him with an education, hoping that he would support us once he found a job. Unfortunately, that dream has been shattered by someone’s actions. He had never mentioned feeling unwell or being hospitalized,” says his mother, Sarah Rono.
Mrs. Rono vividly remembers her conversation with her son last Thursday, reminiscing about his vibrant energy and passion. She stresses Laban’s commitment to his job and the family’s hopes for his future support. The shocking incident that occurred within the confines of the hospital, a supposedly safe haven, has left Johana Rono in shock.
