Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s lawyer Danstan Omari has dismissed reports that his client fled the country amid a probe by government agencies.
Omari confirmed that Matiang’i, who is being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Corruption Commission (EACC), left the country on February 19th for a two-week trip to the United Kingdom.
The attorney said reports of his client fleeing the country are “clearly stage-managed wars and evidently driven by inexplicable vendetta and malice.”
He noted that Matiang’i flew to the UK aboard KLM (passenger) flight KL 566 to attend to an urgent private family matter, in a private capacity.
“I have instructions that my client informally notified senior security sector and diplomatic officials about his two-week trip to the UK. It is therefore unfair to cast aspersions on his movement,” said Omari.
He added: “Those familiar with his travel schedules over time will confirm that he travels regularly to that part of the world via KLM and — as was in this case — very openly, through open public means.”
The DCI is investigating Matiang’i over the alleged police raid at his house in Karen on February 9th while the EACC is looking into his wealth accrued during his 10-year tenure as a cabinet secretary.
Omari stated that his client is not aware of any investigations against him but he welcomes any action by officers as is their constitutional mandate.

A friend of mine who lives…
A friend of mine who lives in Rome has just called me and said that Matiang’i was spotted leaving an SDA church in a neighborhood populated mainly by Africans and Caribbean people. My friend also said that Matiang’i kept looking over his shoulders as if to make sure he was not being followed.
