Kenyans Warned Against Using the Title 'Engineer' if They are Not Professional Engineers

The Engineers Board of Kenya has warned Kenyans against using the title “Engineer” or “Eng” before their names if they are not professional engineers or consulting engineers legally registered by the Board.

In a notice dated December 8th, the board’s CEO Eng. Margaret Ogai said the misuse of the title is in contravention of Section 26 of the Engineers Act 2011.

“The Engineers Act 2011 prohibits the use of the term ‘engineer’ by unregistered or unlicensed persons. It states in Section 47(2) that ‘A person who, being not registered or licensed under this Act – a. wilfully and falsely takes or uses in any way the style or form or title of ‘engineer’ or “engineers” in describing his occupation or his b. displays any sign, board, card or other device or uses a prescribed stamp representing or implying that he is an engineer, commits an offence,” said Ogai.

She added: “This communication, therefore, serves to bring the above breach of the law to the attention of such persons and the public and direct such persons to cease and desist from impersonating as such therefore misleading the public.”

Established under Section 3(1) of the Engineers Act, 2011, the Engineers Board of Kenya is mandated with the registration of engineers and engineering consulting companies.

It is also charged with the regulation of engineering, professional services, setting standards, development, and general practice of engineering.

The board said the list of all registered engineers in the country can be found on its website www.ebk.go.ke.

  2. How about using our own…
How about using our own titles in our own local languages?
    We do not need limitations.
We have inventors in our local languages. We have engineers in our local languages that do not need titles or boards.
Those boards need to translate the meaning of engineers in local languages and the boards regulations in local languages so the citizens have an understanding.

  3. ” By taking a people’s…
” By taking a people’s language we kill and destroy their mental individuality and their creativity”
In our languages we become what we were meant to be individually. We become what we were destined to be both spiritually and physically even before we were physically born into this world. In someone else’s language we are defined as a certain group ( blacks) and we are instructed on what to become and what not to become.
This is an old play book that all Kenyans and all Africans must run away from. We are in a new era.
Our local languages must be our guide in the new era!!

@ Kenya,I agree with your comments. what I would like to add is that, Africans are obsessed with these titles for the wrong reasons. They is used as a ego-booster,and as an intimidation tool. This should not be the case. Holders of such titles should have humility, integrity, kindness, humbleness, and respect for all. When you have all these qualities, they will speak volumes of you, than a mere title.
