The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has obtained an order to freeze Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s assets worth millions of shillings.
High Court judge Esther Maina on Thursday ordered EACC to seize Obado’s two luxury vehicles and residential property in Nairobi’s posh Loresho Ridge estate pending the hearing and determination of a case where he is accused of embezzling Sh73.4 million from Migori county government coffers.
The judge further barred Obado from selling the vehicles and collecting rent from the said residential apartment, and instead remit all proceeds from the house to a joint account in the name of EACC and the governor.
“Pending the hearing and determination of this matter an order is granted that the monthly rental income of Sh143,000 derived from renting out of the Loresho Ridge House be remitted in the joint earning accounts in name of EACC and Mr Obado,” ruled Justice Maina.
Obado’s four children, Jerry Zachary Okoth, Scarlet Susan Okoth, Dan Okoth and Evelyne Adhiambo as well as his associate Peter Kwaga were also ordered to surrender vehicles and their logbooks currently in their possession to EACC within seven days. The five were also barred from selling or transferring the frozen assets.
Investigations by EACC revealed that Obado indirectly received Sh73.4 million from companies that traded with the Migori county government between 2013 and 2017.
Obado’s four children are said to have received multiple payments from 10 companies that did business with the county government.
The 10 companies are Misoft Company Limited, Tarchdog Printers, Deltrack ICT Services, Seletrack Consultants, and Mactebac Contractors. Others are Joyush Business, Swyfcon Engineering, Atinus Services, Kajulu Business, Victorious Investment, Dolphus Softwares, Dankey Press, and Pesulus Services.
The family allegedly used the funds to acquire a prime property at Loresho Ridge in Nairobi, buy luxury cars, pay school fees, upkeep and medical bills for Obado’s children in the UK, Scotland, and Australia.
The case will be mentioned on September 18th.
