Deputy President William Ruto has vowed to continue donating cash to churches even as pressure mounts on clerics to reject politicians’ contributions.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Ruto says nothing will stop him from giving away money to churches, stating that his faith comes first before ‘politician’ title.
“Since Sunday school we learned to kneel before and worship GOD that’s the ONLY reason we stand before men,” Ruto states in a tweet.
He adds: “We will continue to worship Jehovah with our hearts and substance.”
He further maintains that he is not ashamed of his God and faith. “We are unashamed of our God and unapologetic of our faith. We are Christians first other titles after,” he notes.
Churches in Kenya have come under sharp criticism in recent days, with Opposition leader Raila Odinga accusing corrupt leaders of turning churches into avenues of money laundering.
Odinga called for investigations against Ruto, questioning the source of millions he donates to churches every weekend when his monthly salary is known to be only Sh1 million.
“Every weekend, this church Sh5 million, the other church Sh5 million, the other church Sh5 million. That’s Sh15 million in one weekend.”
“Your salary is only Sh1 million per month and in a whole month, you could donate Sh100 million. This needs to be investigated,” Odinga said.

Kama mafisi hawa kweli wanaamini sala/maombi kubadilisha kila kitu, ningependa wamwombe huyo “mungu wao wa bandia” (fake god) amalize ufisadi nchini kabla ya mwisho wa mwezi huu wa nne! Pili, ningependa wambombe huyo mungu wao awaangushie pesa kutoka mbinguni ili Ruto aanze kujenga viwanda nchini na mamilioni ya pesa alizo nazo!
Kama ufisadi utakuwa ungaliko kuanzia mwezi ujao, itakuwa dhahiri (evident) ya kwamba, mungu wanaomwomba ni bandia na tapeli kama wao.
