A Kenyan woman has made history as the first African to receive one of the top awards at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s.
On Friday, Fletcher School feted Justice Joyce Aluoch in recognition of her role in promoting the institution’s standards through her various roles in Kenya and globally. The Lady Justice Aluoch was recognized as a distinguished graduate.
“My heart is full, my spirit is light…I may stand before you as someone with rich legal experience and who has lived a full life but in many aspects my story is like your own,” she told graduates at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
“I was challenged to accomplish things that had never crossed my mind. When you reach for higher, your possibilities will become unlimited,” the former Court of Appeal judge added.
Other notable figures who received the award include President and CEO of MasterCard Foundation Reeta Roy and former US Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson.
In 2009, Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch became the first judge from Kenya to be appointed to serve at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, Netherlands. In 2015, she accomplished yet another milestone after she became the first Vice-President of the ICC.
