MPs Threaten to Impeach Treasury CS Henry Rotich over Hiked Fuel Prices

A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Members of Parliament have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to scrap the new fuel levy announced on Saturday.

Speaking at a media briefing on Sunday, the leaders led by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch threatened to impeach the Cabinet Secretary if the new taxes on fuel are not rescinded.

“The fact that we are in recess doesn’t mean our hands are tied,” Oluoch said.

The MPs have accused the Jubilee administration of being insensitive to the already high cost of living. They further vowed to mobilize Kenyans to demonstrate against the hiked fuel prices.

“We are invoking our sovereignty now under Article 1 of the constitution and saying that if you do not withdraw this directive, we will mobilise the people of Kenya in their numbers to come to the streets  to demonstrate and we will institute proceedings for your removal,” stated MP Oluoch.

In a statement sent to the press on Sunday, the Motorists’ Association of Kenya urged its members to boycott the increased fuel prices by participating in a strike.

On Saturday the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) released new fuel prices that reflect the 16 percent VAT as ordered by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Nairobi motorists will pay Sh127.80 for a litre of super petrol while those in Mombasa will pay Sh 124.49. Those in Mandera will pay the highest for a litre of super petrol at Sh141.61 while Motorists in Nakuru will buy it at Sh128.46.

Eldoret (Sh129.64), Kisumu (Sh129.71), Thika (Sh127.94), Nyeri (Sh129.36), Machakos (Sh127.94), Narok (Sh129.26) Voi (Sh126.09) and Namanga (129.46).
