Man Who Admitted to Skinning More Than 1,000 Cats, Selling Meat to Samosa Vendors Handed 3-year Prison Term

A middle-aged man who was on Sunday busted by residents at an open field in Nakuru slaughtering a cat has been handed a three-year prison sentence.

When he was caught, James Mukangu Kimani confessed to skinning more than 1,000 cats over the past seven years and selling the meat to samosa vendors in Nakuru town. He said he made over Sh500,000 from the business.

“I have ready clients who I have been selling the cat meat to for close to eight years,” the 34-year-old man confessed.

“There’s always a high demand of the cat meat but I have always failed to meet it due to lack of cats in my area. For the close to eight years, I have skinned over 1,100 cats. It was hard when I started the business but my clientele has grown,” Mukangu said.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Benard Mararo on Monday, the suspect pleaded guilty to selling cat meat.

The charge sheet read that Mukangu skinned a cat for human consumption “in a manner deceptive in regard to  its character, nature, value, substance, quality and merit contrary to the Foods, Drugs and Chemical Substances Act.”

He was also charged with slaughtering the animal in a non-designated area contrary to meat control regulations.

The judge handed him a two-year prison sentence or a Sh200,000 fine for the charge of slaughtering the cat for the purpose of human consumption and another one-year or Sh50,000 fine for the second count of slaughtering the pet in an undesignated place.

He will serve the sentences consecutively.

  1. The person who handed this…
The person who handed this Man 3 yrs is and IDIOT; and I guess the IDIOT did not Pass the Law Exam. This man should just be Repremanded and Set free (to find other Means of Survival in tbis Overly CORRUPT Kenya).

I agree. The man should be freed. Cat meat can be a good source of protein and if well cooked can provide much needed protein in our protein starved communities. On the other, mercury been found in the sugar been imported by those crooks is a chemical element of atomic number 80, a heavy silvery-white metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury produces toxicity or death with less than a gram. Mercury also has a zero oxidation state (Hg0) and can only exists as vapor or as a liquid metal. Cooking of Samosas requires high level of boiling cooking oil that kills bacteria whereas there is no escape to mercury in sugar-whether you boil it or consume it in a bowl of cereal, cup of tea, milk, yogurt, etc. It will end up toxic in the body

  2. A cat thief goes to prison…
A cat thief goes to prison the 3 years from a sentence handed down in days. A thief who steals millions of shillings from the NYS, Health Mistry and other government institutions walks free from the same courtroom handing the cat thief 3 years. Equitably, the guy stealing millions should be hanged. Right? What kind of Kenya are we living in?

  3. This cat selling meat …
This cat selling meat Mheshimiwa should be set free today to start the business of raising and selling cat meat. Personally, I don’t eat meat of any kind. However, I remember when I met a Ghanaian person, he told me that if you were to give him chicken and cat meat, he would prefer to eat cat meat.

Three years in jail for selling cat meat and yet nobody has died as a result of eating his samosa?

Something is terribly wrong with our justice system in Kenya. They are quick to terrorize the common mwananchi and pass the judgement in a second.

Wait a minutes sentence ya 3 years na kama angepakikana akijinja kuku ama mbuzimahari haifai..judge..iyo kifungu umetumia..is bias

So when can we expect a judgement on NYS part 1 and part 2, poisonous sugar importers, the MP Gideon Mwiti who raped a married woman and all the hundreds of corrupt land deals. Oh and Alfred Keter’s case of forged tresury bills and the Nakumatt Indian thief..

    Mheshimiwa Marge:

Our Mheshimiwa cat-meat seller is progressive. He has learnt that you cannot die or get sick when you eat cat meat.

A few years ago, there was another Mheshimiwa who sold dog meat in Eldoret. he confessed and people beat him up.

We live in a world where people in various cultures have expanded their menu. What I would like to ask these two Waheshimiwa’s is simply speak the truth about the kind of meat that they are selling to the blind consumers.

I understand in Naivasha, donkey meat is sold! But three years in jail for selling cat meat! It is not fair.

  9. Looks like all one has to do…
Looks like all one has to do is declare the nature of the “beast”,and slaughter it in a designated place. If paka meat is declared safe for human consumption ,idont see why permits should not be grant…It might insult the sensibilities of some folks, but eventually wananchi will find it a delicacy.Stray cats will become athing of the past as we expand our menu with “catletts”otherwise matumbo ya paka.

  10. Cat meat, donkey meat, dog…
Cat meat, donkey meat, dog meat….. what’s next for desperate kenyans? Human meat maybe? The depths to which poverty and desperation can lower humans is hard to believe. Thank you, successive Kenya governments, your support of corruption and ineptitude is achieving the desired results.
