Governor Mike Sonko has given more details on the person he is likely to appoint as the new Nairobi Deputy Governor, a seat that fell vacant after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe earlier this year.
Speaking during an interview with Kameme FM on Monday morning, Sonko disclosed that Igathe’s replacement will be a well-educated woman from the Kikuyu community, but didn’t not reveal her identity.
“I know that the deputy governor post should go to a Kikuyu because they have a large population that supported me but let me appoint a Kikuyu I want.”
“A technocrat, a professional and an elite. I already have names and I will give it to a woman but I need to consult first and the only people I will consult are President Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president William Ruto,” said Sonko during an interview on Kameme FM.
Sonko said this will be an appreciation to the Kikuyu community for supporting him and defended them against claims of being tribal.
“I have worked well with Kikuyus since 2010 where they overwhelmingly voted for me as Makadara MP. In 2013 they also voted for me as senator and later as a governor. They are not tribal and if they were, I would not have been the governor,” he said.
Last week, Sonko submitted to the Nairobi County Assembly for vetting and approval, names of five nominees to the position. All five were women.
Those in the list included; former Nairobi Woman Representative Rachel Shebesh, former ODM nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, Citizen TV news presenter Ann Kiguta, Lawyer Karen Nyamu and city business lady Agnes Kagure Kariuki.
If Sonko relies on the list to pick his deputy; then the seat could either go to Shebesh, Kiguta, Nyamu or Ms Kariuki, who all hail from the Kikuyu community.
I am deeply offended by…
I am deeply offended by Sonko’s assertions. The post should go to the best candidate, man or woman, irrespective of tribe. He is appointing a Kikuyu as they support him?! He is being tribal and going against the inclusive ethos!
Me too, this is quite…
Me too, this is quite offensive in all ways shape and form. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city that has all tribes, races , creed etc represented, to make such an announcement is so irresponsible. I can’t wait for his term to end , he has proven to be useless so far. I was among those who gave me a benefit of a doubt, but he has proven to be a guy who lacks management and leadership skills.
Agreed that’s its really…
Agreed that’s its really offensive to make tribe the main criteria for picking someone for a job….whoever the woman is, she should say no sir….if she is a woman of principle
It would have been better if…
It would have been better if Sonko revealed how i will benefit with a Gikuyu woman selection for the useless seat.Whether a Gikuyu or not does’t matter.The big question to the YES voters is-What are the duties of a deputy governor apart from receiving a shs 1m.per month salary for awaiting the governor’s death?
Why dont you give that post…
Why dont you give that post to the tribe that least supported you.To show that you have no ill feelings toward them…
And i concur with Sukari on this.you should work to benefit all in your county,by using the best staff you can get,including diaspora.
Hehehehe Guys u need to…
Hehehehe Guys u need to study politics!Politics it’s a game of numbers n sonko knows very well that if he doesn’t consider the seat for the biggest community who voted for him he is completely not winning second term.Yes this kikuyu has to be someone who can deliver no doubt on that?I have said many times that Kenyans need to b proud of their tribes n where they come from n nobody should b treated bad or ddrscriminated when it comes to jobs??Politics is about numbers in every country including USA u guys resides(Blue n red states)same tribe shits
I thought you are above that…
I thought you are above that stupidity Mkenya.Kumbe wee ndio zaidi.Tutafaidika na nini kama WaGikuyu ndugu yangu?All i know is that Nairobi will be worse than it is in another four years to come.
@mkenya halisi.To me its…
@mkenya halisi.To me its aquestion of integrity and doing what is right as opposed to just going wirb the flow,or business as usual.How else will things change for the better if we keep on recircling bad ideas
@karinga politics is a game…
@karinga politics is a game of numbers anywhere in the world whether u agree with me or not.Its a fact n u will b confused otherwise but that doesn’t mean we should b voting for useless pple who cannot deliver coz he belongs to us???Sonko has shown he cares for mwananchi wakawaida as an mp n senator thou I have issue with how he got his money!Sonko will deliver if the Mount Kenya cartels who controls Nairobi can keep off!But if he don’t deliver trust me Kikuyus will control governorship seat come 2022.so if u call facts stupidity let it be.Am a realist n don’t live on a lie or fake
and no wonder NBO with its…
and no wonder NBO with its capability, 70% of its land mass is poverty ridden, trash ridden, inhabitable constructions and cannot be at per with any world cosmopolitan city , even ghettos of Washington DC NE are high class than Buruburu and yes I visit it every year and other worldly cities and no Nairobi is not even close hata kama you all try to make it seem like you are riding so high! Nairobi needs a real manager I should ran but I have no stolen millions to vie for the sit – sigh
Please run.Run baby run!Ihad…
Please run.Run baby run!Ihad you in mind when i suggested diaspora should be considered as well.I offer my self as your campaign manager.Plus a sizeable donation
@formerly I agree with you…
@formerly I agree with you about our ghettos which the gava needs to fix by building beta housing n infrastructure but u cannot compare buruburu houses with DC ghettos .I think u hate Kenya so much n please bring all yr parents n siblings to USA mkae huko juu unafikirianga hapo ni heaven.U sound like a looser bana!
@Mkenya halisi, hakuna haja…
@Mkenya halisi, hakuna haja ya matusi. FG2 is entitled to her view and preference, ala? You can’t deny Kenya has become a dump, more so Nairobi. Kenya has regressed in development and the infra structure is not fit for purpose today, that’s why Nairobians are going without water for months and their rubbish is piled so high even the rats have resisted to eating it! Disgusting! We love Kenya because it is HOME, lakini……
