Most often immigration from one country to another is a journey that needs to be captured by immigrants themselves. Peter Gaitho has done that in his maiden novella, The Pilgrim from Limuru. The new book is the fictional story of Ann Kanini. She embarks on a journey from her country of birth, Kenya, to the USA to attend her cousin’s graduation ceremony in New Jersey. But Ann, just like many other people, decides to extend her stay and settle in the USA. Her stay in the USA takes her from New Jersey to Washington State, to Massachusetts, with the hope of legalizing her stay. This is not an easy journey, as the main character comes to find out. Meanwhile, Ann had left her husband, Mwai Tanu, and two daughters, back in Kenya. This is an emotive issue faced by numerous immigrants who leave their loved ones back home with the hope of bettering the fortunes of the family. Many succeed, but at what cost? Others fail to reach the always elusive dream.

Some of the themes covered by the writer are betrayal, friendship, and the tribulations faced by immigrants in the USA

Besides Ann’s tribulations, we meet other Kenyan immigrants in the USA and get a glimpse of how life unfolds for them in their adopted country. The story of Ann could be the story of millions of immigrants all over the world and the emotional and psychological effects that immigration brings to the lives of the immigrants.

This quick read book is sure to remind many immigrants about their own journeys to their adopted countries. The self-published book is a no-putdowner.
