Hellen Obiri has cemented her dominance in the marathon world by successfully defending her title at the 2024 Boston Marathon.
The 34-year-old Kenyan runner clocked a time of 2:22:37, etching her name in history as the first woman to win consecutive Boston Marathons since 2005. Obiri’s victory was a testament to her meticulous training regimen. In a post-race interview, she attributes her success to the “flawless training” she undertook in the lead-up to the race. The focus on speed and overall preparation, she emphasized, instilled immense confidence in her abilities.
“Last year, I was a newcomer to marathons,” Obiri acknowledges, “but this year, I was much better prepared.”
The challenge of the Boston Marathon cannot be understated. Obiri faced a formidable field of nearly 30,000 participants, making the competition fierce. However, her strategic training proved to be the winning formula. This triumph further solidifies Obiri’s position as a distance running legend. She holds the unique distinction of being the only athlete to claim world titles across all three major distance running disciplines: indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country.
Her accolades include two world championship victories in the 5,000 meters where she also set a new championship record in 2019. On the indoor track, Obiri reigned supreme in the 3,000 meters at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, followed by a silver medal in 2014 and a fourth-place finish in 2018. Her outdoor prowess extends to the world of cross-country as well where she secured the coveted title of World Cross Country Champion in 2019.
