The family and friends of Brian Njuguna Wambaa of Tacoma, Washington are saddened by his sudden and tragic passing.
Brian, 25 years old, passed away in a car crash on Interstate 5 Monday around 1:45am, March 25th as he returned home from visiting his sister, brother-in-law and nephew in Portland, Oregon. On his way back home, Brian’s car veered off the highway and struck a tree. He escaped the initial crash and decided to go seek help but was unfortunately struck by an oncoming truck. First responders pronounced dead at the scene.
Brian’s family says he moved to the US at the age of 11, and soon found his love for athletics. He achieved success in both soccer and track, leading him to being awarded a scholarship and Tacoma Community College.
Over the last 7 years he also played for local soccer clubs including Kenyan Team and Umoja FC among others.
“It goes without saying that Brian will be sorely missed by his parents, siblings, cousins, aunties, uncles, and the worldwide community that knew him. Brian had a brilliant smile that lit up a room. His endless positivity could encourage a weary spirit. His absence will leave a mark that can never be filled. Though he may be in a better place, we all wish that he would still be here with us all,” reads a message from Brian’s family and friends.
Daily prayer meetings are being held starting at 6pm at JCC Tacoma; 8441 S. G St, Tacoma, WA 98444.
A fundraiser will be held on Sunday, March 31st, 2019 starting at 6pm at Diaspora Community of Faith Church (DCFC), located at 230 S. 94th St, Tacoma, WA 98444.
A GoFundMe account has also been setup to help raise funds for Brian’s send-off: gofundme.com/farewell-sendoff-for-our-brother-brian-wambaa

Your post is up there for all to read. A wise man said when you are in a hole stop digging.
It is very crucial you stay…
It is very crucial you stay in the car and call for help. Do not try to walk along the highway or cross the highway!!! This gentleman is the third we have lost( reported by Mwakilishi) via senseless decision. Again stay in your car and call for help. IF you have drunk something, have a day in court with the judge, accept judgement instead of six foot under. It is never the end of the world and your life is precious; very precious to be ran over on the highway like a wild dog. RIP.

It is also super inconsiderate to call the person driving the semi truck a idiot. When a semi is going 60 miles a hour going down the freeway in there is no way you can stop on a dime. I feel terrible for Brian as well as the driver. This is something the driver has to think about for the rest of their life. Have some heart.

As a colleague of Brian, I…
As a colleague of Brian, I will always remember him for the warmth of his smile and a personality that drew you in like gravity. On campus you’d rarely find Brian traveling alone. He would always be in the company of a friend, whether walking to classes or studying for one of the rigorous courses in our program. School was tough but we all had each other. Brian had a optimism that could lift you out of a slump and fuel you for a win.
In class some people will fade into the background but Brian wasn’t just any student, what he contributed to class concepts was a unique perspective and a sense of curiosity. He never had a booming voice nor had the need for one. His intellect spoke volume for him and people listened. For Brian, education wasn’t a place that you go through to get a piece of paper… he grew our community through the relationships he built and the ideas he generated.
I am thankful to have known him and the work ethic he carried. Brian is a Milgard student we can all aspire to be. He worked hard for his education, and had passion for team and community. I, along with others at the University of Washington Tacoma, will continue to carry his memory and the honor of his name.
