David Tett: Kamiti Con Artist Wows Kenyans with a Perfect British Accent [VIDEO]

An extract of an exposé by Citizen TV featuring the infamous cons serving time at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison has gone viral on social media, sparking mixed reactions.

In the video, a hidden camera captured an inmate identified as David Tett conning an unsuspecting caller.

Tett impeccably fakes a British accent, posing as a foreigner who is in Kenya but headed to neighboring South Sudan. Towards the end of the video, he is heard inquiring about the victim’s age among other personal information.

Kenyan online users were wowed by Tett’s mastery of the British accent and his conning skills.

@osorojnr wrote: “This is funny and appalling at the same time. David Tett has mastered the British accent to an extent that he would even con me.”

@WanjikuHSC tweeted: “African-Americans at Kamiti are so damn hilarious. David Tett is in Lodwar ”taan” and he is very ”hepi”. Anyway, those prison cigarettes ain’t gonna buy themselves bro gotta do what he has to do. Kazi ni Kazi.”

@Guevara_KE posted: “The customer care in Kamiti speaking white English is pure comedy. David Tett is an artist.”

@Kachibo01 tweeted: “David Tett is really enjoying his jail term. Imagine the collosum amount he makes daily? No taxation and no one is after him. Additionally, he has a police standing beside him giving him maximum protection. This is why some prisoners prefer not getting freedom.”

Tett, a foster son to former cabinet minister Betty Tett, was handed a death sentence for robbery with violence in 2013.  He was part of a gang that violently robbed his foster father William Mulready Tett on September 6th, 2011 in Karen, Nairobi. He successfully appealed the sentence and the court reduced his jail term to 15 years.

In the exposé dubbed “Kamiti Call Centre”, Citizen TV’s Lulu Hassan revealed the inner workings of the scam that has seen locals and foreigners lose millions of shillings.

An anonymous source who spoke to Lulu said the inmates conduct their dealings in the prison’s Block A, a busy area where no one should be caught idling.

The inmates use a particular brand of a phone that has multiple sim card slots and features that help alter voices.

“Some of the victims marvel at the chance of hooking up with a foreigner, even if they don’t understand English very well, they are usually very happy listening to the accent. You have to entice the woman or man you’re targeting with romantic messages for like a week until they desire to meet you,” the source said.

“When they ask you to visit them, that’s when you bring up issues like the cost of traveling. You can tell them that you are en route from Lodwar and ask them to help you with some money because the petrol attendants don’t take card payments.”

@Mkenya Halisi, I totally agree with you. Fascination with Mzungu’s accent from an african is a sign of “elevated status” by some africans. We have been made to think anything “mzungu” is better. From his skin color, names, hair,to even his mating habits. What a shame! We still need to decolonize our minds, then we shall be totally free.

You’re very right about our love of things foreign. I get shocked when I visit Kenya by the kind of attention i get due to my accent especially in banks and government offices and yet I was born in Kawangware but left when young. Bure kabisa.
