Mount Kenya University (MKU) has announced a new set of rules detailing strict dress code for students.
In a memo released on Wednesday, the university’s Dean of students Martin Muiruri said the institution will not entertain learners wearing revealing clothes.
The country’s largest private university, which has campuses in major towns countrywide, said students are not allowed to wear clothes or pants revealing their “private body parts.”
Dean Muiruri said learners caught violating the new dress code rules will be denied entry into the institution and summoned to the disciplinary committee.
“Persons dressed in clothes/pants revealing private body parts will be denied access into the University premises and will be required to go back and dress decently,” the notice states.
The memo further stated that students are prohibited from donning caps or hats in the lecture halls, in the library, laboratory or when addressing members of staff.
Male students are also required to have well-groomed hair at all times, the memo added.
Female students are not allowed to wear see-through clothes, bare-backs, mini-skirts, crop-tops (tumbo-cut), and low cleavage attire within the university premises.
“Warning will be given in case of breach of the dressing code. After a third warning the student will be referred to a disciplinary committee,” Dean Muiruri warned in the notice.

Congratulations MKU. A learning institution is just that. A place to learn. Certain standards need to be maintained in order to uphold the dignity of both men and women.
We hope all other institutions will follow.
Thank you.
