Kenyan MPs Reject Badly Cooked Food at Parliament's Eatery, Demand 5-Star Catering Services

Members of Parliament have protested the poor quality of food served to them at the National Assembly’s cafeteria.

The MPs want the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to hire professional chefs so that services at Parliament’s eatery can match those of 5-star hotels.

Led by Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale, the parliamentarians have demanded for implementation of a report by a House Committee that recommended changes in catering services.

“We must outsource this service. The legislature cannot do business of cooking food. This should be given to the right people,” says Duale.

After a bench-marking tour to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, National Assembly’s Services and Facilities Committee recommended setting up of two more eateries, refurbishment of the current kitchen among others.

Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Machogu who is the chairman of the committee says his team has been following the matter with Speaker Justin Muturi to ensure the report is implemented.

“I tabled a report containing 50 recommendations to the PSC. We have been following this and have made a call to the chairman of the PSC over this because only 20 per cent of the recommendations have been adopted,” he says.

Earlier this year, MPs suspended the business of the day to debate the quality of food and drinks served to them at the cafeteria.

“Mr Speaker, the type of tea that we are being served when we come here has very little milk. It looks like that offered during funerals,” Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, said.
