Kenyan TV Station Forced Me to Wear Wigs, BBC News Anchor Sharon Macharia Says

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) show host Sharon Macharia has taken a swipe at a Kenyan television station for forcing her to wear wigs.

Taking to social media, the journalist said the unnamed TV station said her Afro hairstyle was inappropriate and demanded she puts on a wig while presenting news.

“When I worked at a local TV station, I was told I couldn’t present the news in my Afro coz it was “inappropriate” I had to wear weaves basically. Well now, I’m presenting a show on @BBCAfrica, wearing my AFRO in all its “inappropriate” glory.” the former K24 TV news anchor said on social media.

Reacting to her post, Ciru Muriuki, also an employee of BBC, said that she was asked to trim her dreadlocks while working for a Kenyan media house.

“I was asked to cut my locs by a boss. I didn’t. Opportunities continued to pass me by at that station. I finally left and now I work at the BBC with my four-year-old uncut locs,” Ciru wrote.

She however stated it was not Mediamax’s K24: “K24 took a chance on me and I’ll be forever grateful to them.”
