Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has once again been put on the spot after a video of a woman exposing how negligent doctors and nurses at the facility caused death of her mother went viral on social media.
In the video, the woman claims her mother passed away after a doctor she only identified as Zawadi refused to administer the right treatment on her.
The lady emotionally narrates what her mom went through in the hands on young college graduates and arrogant nurses at the Kenya’s largest public medical facility.
She says her mother was rushed to Kenyatta hospital on Saturday after she was hit by a boda boda and sustained head injuries.
On arrival at KNH, she was not placed under emergency treatment even after the family sought to have her admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). They were informed that there were no beds available.
She was then taken to ward 5B where her condition worsened leading to her death. She says Dr Zawadi then called the family asking them to come and collect the remains of their mother.
She says the hospital management has doctored her mother’s medical report to show that she was never admitted to the facility.
She says four police officers began trailing her after the hospital bosses learnt that she was in possession of evidence in form of videos showing how the KNH neglected her mother.
She said the officers want to get rid of the recordings and photographs that back her claims in order to save the hospital’s image.
She also questions the qualification of KNH doctors after one said her mother had a blood clot in her head while the other said that there was some sort of watery liquid in her head.
Earlier this year, KNH was in the spot for the wrong reasons among them a rape scandal and another where doctors performed a brain surgery on a wrong patient.
Greed will finish our…
Greed will finish our country. It is so sad. First of all my condolences to this lady and her family.
They should carry out investigations and fire all the doctors or nurses involved.
It so sad that currently in Kenya people have no one to turn to, not even the police but to the masses. Na hatuwezi sema hii shida ni ya mtu mmoja pekee.
What will ultimately end this is Kenyans being united, speaking in one voice. If you know a leader or someone heading a public office is corrupt, doesn’t serve the people accordingly or thinks they are above the law. DO NOT PUT THEM IN OFFICE OR SUPPORT THEM, EVEN IF THEY SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE.
This applies in all matters pertaining to public service. You see people voting i.n lazy, corrupt, vengeful governors, senators, mps mcas who in turn vet equally corrupt individuals to run these public offices then what do you get? Mayhem!
And it affects each and every Kenyan. If it hasn’t yet then ngoja tu, it’s coming. One might say…. Oh well my family goes to private hospitals but you still use public roads and other means of transportation, you still drink the water and eat the food from the same dilapidated soil due to shortcuts… So many effects come up when we don’t start making changes from the top.
It’s so unfortunate.
Where are the Cuban doctors…
Where are the Cuban doctors again?
Saying that this is heart…
Saying that this is heart wrenching would be an understatement. The issue about unprofessional medical professionals is rampant in Kenya, especially in the public hospitals such as KNH. The government need to reign in on these institutions that are adding pain to families rather than helping.
Treatment is not only about attending to the physical problem of the victim. It is high time doctors and nurses in the Kenyan public hospitals understand that there is more to treating a patient than just providing medication. Medical professionals should understand that emotional support and reassurance of the patient and that of the family members are part and parcel of the entire treatment process. KNH administration also need to understand that this lady is a Kenyan who, most likely is paying taxes that goes towards running the institution and what her mom went through in the hands of KNH doctors and nurses is not only unjust but unethical to say the least.
Families need to be treated with dignity and listening to the lady’s lamentation paints a picture of a rotting sense of decency in the public health system in Kenya and the government need to establish a plan to reverse the trend. The government should be looking into the medical curriculum, qualification of doctors and nurses, accountability of the KMPDB board and head of the hospitals.
We as members of the public need not look at these occurrences and accept them as normal, but ought to do our part however way possible to hold the government and relevant authorities accountable.
We have seen more than enough of these incidents and it’s high time Mr. Daniel Yumbya, the CEO of Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and those in Afya House take charge of cleaning this mess.
How can one listen to these…
How can one listen to these young woman who is fighting for the simplest of every human right to care and medical care. Dr ZawAdi all you needed to do is take time and use simplest medical terminology with a calm demeanour and explain to these daughter and family who care soooo very much of there mother . They had a right to know and you had a right to treat all of them including your patient with dignity… you took an oath to use every knowledge gained to save a life … you failed badly in these case.
The nurses involved…
If the founder of nursing care ( ms Nightingale) a compassionate individual who fought soo hard for the dream of care and compassion is extended to all would be ashamed of you.
Your standard to practice
Your ethics
Etc you failed badly
Where was your compassion ..
when these young woman is asking you questions about her mothers care, your job is to promote confidence, compassion, ethics, care,
If you can’t answer politely … do you do guess work for morphine administration or do you do dosage calculations…
If you don’t do guess work then these young lady would not have taught you how to care for her mother… you were the professional here. You would have explained the head to toe assessment, procedures used for head injuries
Being rude and unprofessional you ethically failed badly.. nurses are to be compassionate period!
Please take that nurses cup and budge … look for a hole and sit in darkness and scream to Florence’s nightingale
Shame on you all who sooo true ly are meant to be professionals and you failed these patient and family badly
