The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made it easier for some permanent residents to renew their green cards.
Green card holders who meet certain criteria can now apply to renew or replace their cards online (to e-File Form I-90) after they create an online account on the USCIS website.
You are eligible to file online if:
- Your permanent resident card was lost, stolen or destroyed.
- Your card was mutilated.
- Your name or other biographical information has changed.
- Your card is expiring within six months or has already expired.
- You have taken up commuter status.
- You have been in resident commuter status and are now taking up actual residence in the US.
- You have been automatically converted to permanent resident.
- You have an older edition of the card and must replace it with the current type.
You are not eligible to file online if:
- You have a two-year conditional green card and are applying to remove conditions on permanent residence.
- You are applying for a fee waiver.
- Your card was never received.
- Your card was issued with incorrect data due to USCIS administrative error.
- If filling to renew your card within 30 days of turning 14 and your existing card will not expire before your 16th birthday.
- If filing to renew your card within 30 days on turning 14 and your existing card will expire before your 16th birthday
Those who file online also pay the $450 online and submit their supporting evidence electronically and will be issued with an electronic confirmation receipt. USCIS will also mail them Form I-797C, Notice of Action.
