According to a recent report by Google, former Senator Millicent Omanga emerged as the most searched individual in Kenya in 2023.
The uptick in online interest can be linked to a sensationalized video that circulated, seemingly featuring Omanga. However, it was uncovered to be fake. The intended purpose of this production was likely to denigrate the political figure’s standing. Next up in rank is Pastor Ezekiel, well-known for his association with controversial religious leader Mackenzie Nthenge who is accused of running a sect. Musician DJ Fatxo trails close behind as he was subject to scrutiny regarding his presumed involvement in a friend’s unfortunate death.
However, the musician was ultimately cleared of all charges. The fourth searched individual is content creator Georgina Njenga whose intimate videos were unlawfully obtained and leaked to the public. Achieving fifth place is Mackenzie who led a contentious religious group that reportedly demanded extensive fasting, prompting a large number of fatalities. Accomplished runner Faith Kipyegon takes the sixth spot on the list, standing as the sole athlete mentioned in the list.
Google announced that she had achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female athlete to complete a double victory in the 1,500-5,000 meters event at the World Championships. In terms of search trends, the ex-Interior Cabinet Secretary attracted interest as Kenyans searched for details regarding rumours of his possible apprehension by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Wafula Chebukati, the former Chairman of the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) claims the eighth position in the search rankings, while Supreme Court Chief Justice Martha Koome secured the ninth spot. Mathe wa Ngara, who was recently arrested by the DCI on suspicion of selling marijuana, earned the tenth position on the list of most searched Kenyan personalities in 2023.
